TECH, LINKOUS STUDENTS PLANT TREES AT SCHOOL

Gilbert Linkous Elementary third-graders planted 35 18-inch tulip poplar saplings on the school grounds last week with the help of 20 Virginia Tech landscape architecture students.

The second-year landscape architecture lab class annually designs and completes a project in the town of Blacksburg. The students started the project this year with 100 trees, a map of a section of Blacksburg, and an idea to involve children in the planting.

After an enthusiastic response from the Gilbert Linkous staff and pupils, the students created a design consistent with the current landscape. "We wanted it to react with what was already here," said Brian Middleton, a Tech student involved in the project.

The design uses most of the 35 saplings in a cluster of trees in a corner of the school lot. Four lines of trees radiate from the cluster encompassing the school building.

The design intentionally used only 35 of the 100 available trees, leaving one sapling for each of the 65 third-graders to take home and plant. The trees came with an attached a packet containing planting directions and a piece of blank paper.

The pupils are to draw pictures of the planted trees in their yards and return the papers to the Tech students. The drawings will be part of the landscape architecture students' final presentation of the project in January. The presentation will be displayed in the Gallery of the Architecture Annex, Virginia Tech.
