UTILITY CLAIMS TO BE VA.'S LARGEST TAXPAYER

Virginia Power, a Richmond-based electric utility, claims it will be the state's largest taxpayer this year, paying $186.5 million in state and local taxes. The estimated tax payments will be 13.12 percent higher than the company paid in 1993.

Eastern Virginia accounted for 34 percent of the total property taxes paid, central Virginia 23 percent, Western Virginia 22 percent, Northern Virginia 19 percent and southern Virginia 2 percent.

Bath County in Western Virginia will collect $4.32 million in taxes from the company this year, primarily for its pumped storage generating plant there. The largest property tax payment, $9.69 million, went to Louisa County, home of the North Anna nuclear power station.

In Western Virginia, the utility serves portions of Alleghany, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt and Rockbridge counties.
