AROUND NEW RIVER LEON DEVUSSER OF RADFORD DIES IN SALEM HOSPITAL

Former City Councilman and businessman Leon R. DeVusser died Monday at the Veterans Hospital in Salem. DeVusser served on City Council in the late 1970s as well as on other city boards and commissions. He also was a familiar face at meetings of the City-University Joint Commission on Public Affairs, which deals with town-gown issues.

DeVusser also once served as secretary and treasurer of the New River Valley Youth Home.

He operated West End Amoco for 22 years, and was past secretary and a board member of the Virginia Gasoline Retailers Association.

DeVusser is survived by his wife, Georgia, and two daughters. Services are today at 2 p.m. at DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel. The Rev. O.D. Morgan will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Calvary Baptist Church building fund.

Blood bank re-accredited

RADFORD - Radford Community Hospital has been re-accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks. Accreditation follows an intensive, on-site inspection by specially trained representatives of the association and establishes that medical, technical and administrative performance levels meet or exceed the association's standards.

Lester L. Lamb, president and chief executive officer, said the hospital sought the accreditation because the program promotes a level of professional and medical expertise that contributes to quality performance.

Radford Community Hospital joins more than 2,000 similar facilities across the United States and abroad that have earned this endorsement.
