THOUGHTS ON WELFARE

Paula Kirtley's views on Gov. George Allen's welfare reform plan:

"People shouldn't be forced to sit at a drive-through window at [a fast food restaurant]. I have a feeling that's what's going to happen.

"How dare they say that they're going to take away what little we have. People are going to fall through the cracks really bad. People are going to be angry, act out, then we'll end up with more women in jail. I guess the taxpayers can pay for them there.

"The message seems to be that it's OK to drown in the turbulent and murky waters that represent poverty, but only if you do so quietly. Thrashing around helpless is not politically correct, and asking for a hand up might be mistaken for a handout. You're not supposed to ask for assistance.

"I don't think it's to help people break away from dependence. I think it's punitive."
