The explosion broke a water pipe that flooded the rest room, a locker room and a classroom, and caused school to be closed. Nobody was hurt.
A teacher found the device under a sink before school started. He tried to render it harmless by throwing water on it, but the device exploded. Repair costs are estimated at $800.
Investigator Doug King with the Wythe County Sheriff's Office said the boy has been charged with manufacturing an explosive device. Authorities are looking into the possibility of federal charges as well. The student has been suspended from school and was released pending a hearing in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
