AKERS, Mary Duncan, 82, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, December 15, 1994, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Mrs. Akers was born in Floyd on October 30, 1912, a daughter of the late Beauford and Ida Belle Reed Duncan. She was preceded in death by three sons, Alva Akers, Lawrence Akers and an infant son. Survivors include her husband, Edgar W. Akers; four daughters and sons-in-law, Erma and Linwood White and Loula and Cecil Broce all of Blacksburg, Betty and Larry Thomas, Floyd, and Alice and Paul Nixon, Troutville; two daughters-in-law, Mary Kegley, Blacksburg and Sarah Sue Akers, Hopwell; six brothers, Elbert Duncan and J. T. Duncan both of Chrisitansburg, Elisha Duncan, Willis, Harry Duncan, Riner, David Duncan, Roanoke and Ernest Duncan, Blacksburg; 12 granchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 1994, at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Price officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Mrs. Betty Basham, 200 Evans Street, Christiansburg, VA 24073 or Blacksburg Rescue Sqaud, 200 Progress Street, N.E., Blacksburg, VA 24060. ARRINGTON, Christine Newman, 86, of Botetourt Co. died Thursday, December 15, 1994, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was a former employee of Shenandoah Life Insurance Co. and an noted musician and teacher in Botetourt. She was a member of the Botetourt Chapter #135 Order of the Eastern Star, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the St. Mark's United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, former Sheriff of Botetourt, Joseph M. Arrington Sr. and by one son, Thomas Edward Arrington. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lee and William G. Loope of Botetourt Co.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph M. Jr., and Sue Arrington of Botetourt Co., William Harold and Suzanne Arrington of Dalzelle, S.C., Charles Michael and Janice Arrington of Chesapeake; also surviving are 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Vistiation will be held Sunday, December 18, 199 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rader Funeral Home, Troutville. Funeral arrangements are pending for Monday.

BEVERIDGE, Virginia Laverne Osborne, 74, of Roanoke, formerly of Vinton, went to be with the Lord Friday, December 16, 1994. She was predeceased by her husband, Whitmar W. ``Whit'' Beveridge. Mrs. Beveridge was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church and formerly a member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, Vinton; and was a charter member of Timberlake United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, where she was active as a Girl Scout Leader. She was retired from First National Exchange Bank, Trust Department (currently First Union) after 22 years of service. She was an active member of the Shenandoah Chapter of American Business Women's Association for 22 years and a former volunteer for the March of Dimes for a number of years. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Beverly A. and Roy W. Caviness, Vinton; sons and daughters-in-law, William W. ``Bill'' and Theresa M. Beveridge, Woodbridge; Gary L. and Anna P. Beveridge, Roanoke; grandchildren, Robin L. Kelley and husband, Bobby, Roanoke; Rebecca D. ``Becky'' Smith and husband, Steve, Bedford; Roy W. Caviness Jr. and wife, Sarah, Sanibel Island, Fla., Heather V. Beveridge, Roanoke; Billy A. BRANDON, Harvey Maynard, 65, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 13, 1994. He is the son of the late Maynard C. Brandon who preceded him in death also a daughter, Linda Marie Brandon; brother, Thomas Brandon. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Brandon of Wilmington, N.C.; one daughter, Rebecca Ann Brandon, Wilmington, N.C.; mother, Mrs. Marie E. Brandon, Roanoke; four sisters, Josephine Johnson, Roanoke, Yvonne Waid of Temple Hills, Md., Lillie Mae Rutland of Cherokee, Ala., Mrs. Thelma White of Temple Hills, Md.; one brother, Robert Brandon; mother-in-law, Mrs. Lizzie Martin, Roanoke; two sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law, uncle, Rev. Joseph Garland of Danville, Va.; one aunt, nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 17, 1994, 2 p.m. at Fizer Funeral Home Chapel the Rev. Dr. Noel C. Taylor officiating. BUTLER, John Edward Jr., (Eddie), of 327 Curtis Tignor Road, Newport News, Va., formerly of Bedford, died Wednesday, December 14, 1994, in a local hospital. Born in Bedford, February 4, 1958, the son of John Edward Butler Sr. (Bobbie) and Mrs. Sylvia Johnson Butler of Bedford. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Felecia W. Butler; two daughters; one son; four sisters; one aunt; grandmother, Mrs. Rosa Johnson of Bedford; and a host of other relatives and friends; mother-in-law, Mrs. Nora Williams of Mount Vernon, N.Y. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, December 18, 1994, at the Otterville Baptist Church at 11 a.m. in Bedford County. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 8 at the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel.

COOPER, Lucille Hammond, of Johnson City, Tenn., died Friday, December 16, 1994, in a local nursing home after an extended illness. She is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton. She was the youngest of 13 children born of Cora and Nathanial Hammond of Saltville. Mrs. Cooper had a long and distinguished teaching career in the elementary and high school systems of Carter County. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year on two occasions at Hampton High School. She was a graduate of Marshall College and has a MA of ETSU. Surviving are her loving husband of 56 years, Ernest W. Cooper of the home; two sons, Dr. James F. Cooper of Charleston, S.C. and Dr. E.W. (Skip) Cooper II of Johnson City, Tenn., and their wives; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Evelyn Clark of Radford. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Tetrick Funeral Home in E lizabethton, Tenn. with interment to follow in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

DEWBERRY, Martha Katherine Saferight, 69, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, December 16, 1994. Graveside services 10 a.m. Monday, Mountain View Cemetery.

FOX, Estelle Ruth, 85, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, December 7, 1994. She was born in Pennsylvania and spent most of her life in the New York metropolitan area. She resided in Roanoke for the last ten years at Honeywood Apts., Elm Park Estates, and Brandon Oaks Nursing Home. She was the widow of the late Lawrence Fox. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Rabbi Jerome S. and Carole R. Fox; grandchildren, Elana Fox (age 18) and Ari Fox (age 14). She was a member of Beth Israel Synagogue, and a life member of Hadassah and O. R. T. Burial was at Beth El Cemetery, Rochelle Park, N.J. on Friday, December 9, 1994. A memorial service will be held at Beth Israel Synagogue, Sunday, December 18, 1994, at 3 p.m. with Rabbi Frank W. Muller officiating. The family suggests contributions to Beth Israel Synagogue be made in lieu of flowers.

HELMONDOLLAR, Virginia Louise, 72, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, December 15, 1994. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lula (Sally) and Richard T. McFarland, Nancy and Henry Barnett, all of Roanoke; granddaughter, Frances Asbury; grandsons, Timmy, Billy, Milton and Roy Asbury, all of Roanoke, and James Asbury, North Augusta, S.C.; great-granddaughter, Kayla Noel. Graveside funeral services will be held 12 noon Monday, at Evergreen Burial Park by the Rev. Robert Sadler. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel.

HOLLAND, Ruth Naomi, of Bedford, died Thursday, December 15, 1994 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Otis Holland; two daughters, Miss Brenda Holland of Bedford, Paulette Andrews of Roanoke; two sons, James Holland of Bedford, Paul Holland of Harrisonburg; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Haynes of Roanoke, Mrs. Geraldine Gilmore of Bedford, Mrs. Ida Gardner of Arlington; one brother, James Flood of Bedford; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Western Light Baptist Church in Bedford County. Interment will be the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Bedford Funeral Home.

HUDSON, Arnold Matthew, (``Shorty''), 44, of Narrows, died Thursday, December 15, 1994, at his home. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born on September 17, 1950 and was the son of the late Arthur Ellis and Dodie Pauline Albert Hudson. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Buddy Hudson, Ellis Hudson, Pat Hudson, Brownie Hudson, Chapman Hudson. He was an employee of Cecil's Flooring Company. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Blankenship Hudson; a son, Kermit M. (Huck) Hudson, Narrows, Va.; daughters, Stephaine H. (Mrs. Randy) Bl ankenship and Brandi H. (Mrs. Barry) Cumbee, both of Narrows, Va.; a brother, Roland E. Hudson, Pearisburg, Va.; sisters, Juanita H. (Mrs. Paul) Croy and Iva Jean White, both of Pearisburg, Va.; very special grandchildren, Carol Dawn Cumbee and Daniele Brooke Cumbee both of Narrows, Va.; special aunt, Dump Jones, Pembroke, Va. and a special father and mother-in-law, Kermit and Zelma Blankenship who loved him very much. Two very special sisters-in-law, Reta Kellison and Brenda Myers. He is also survived by several nephews, who will serve as pallbearers and several neices. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Riffe's Funeral Chapel in Narrows, with Rev. James Pentecost officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Narrows, Va. The family will receive friends at Riffe's in Narrows, Va. Saturday evening from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

JACKSON, Thomas David, 72, of 745 South Street, Bedford, died Friday, December 16, 1994, at Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was the wife of Melva Bonds Jackson. Mr. Jackson was born in Bedford November 28, 1922, a son of the late John Ed Jackson and Martha Ann Dickerson Jackson. He was a member of Washington Street Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of World War II. In addition to his wife his is survived by a daughter, Gloria Jones of Roanoke. A service will be conducted Monday 11 a.m. at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. H. A. Henderson. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bedford Rescue Squad.

KILGORE, Garnett Bowman 92, of Roanoke, died Friday, December 16, 1994. She was the widow of Howard A. (Killy) Kilgore and a member of First Christian Church. She was a retired bookkeeper and cashier at National Business College and was a member of many bridge clubs. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn Kilgore Dougherty and Captain Francis J. Dougherty, U.S.N. (ret.), Arlington, Va.; three granddaughters, Alyson Dougherty, age 22, Laura Dougherty, age 15, and Felicia Dougherty, age 14; sister-in-law, Mrs. Mabel Naff Bowman, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 12 noon Saturday by the Rev. Jim Rivers. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday.

OSTASESKI, Teresa Bennett, 77, of Roanoke, died Thursday, December 15, 1994. She was a registered nurse, graduate of St. Vincent Hospital and School of Nursing in New York City. She was retired from Roanoke Memorial Hospitals and Roanoke Memorial School of Nursing. She was active in the Art Museum of Western Virginia, the Docent Guild, Meals on Wheels, the Ronald McDonald House, the Thursday Morning Music Club and the Greenvale School Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Ostaseski and her sons, Paul and Marc. She is survived by her brot her, Joseph Bennett, Oyster Bay L.I, New York; her son, Peter Ostaseski, Salem, Va.; her daughter, Mary Whitbeck Williamsburg, Va.; daughters-in-law, Anne Lee Ostaseski and Susan Ostaseski; son-in-law, William Whitbeck, and grandchildren, Peter Ostaseski Jr., Jessica Whitbeck and Caroline Whitbeck. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, December 18 at Oakey's South Chapel. A Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church at 1 p.m. Monday, December 19, 1994. STEELE, Edward Glenn, 77, of Roanoke, died Thursday, December 15, 1994. A veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Gunners Mate after 21 years of service. He also retired as an Ordinance Equipment Mechanic from the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, Va., after 21 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn V. Steele; sister, Sadie Meade, Middlesex, N.C.; stepdaughter, Melanie Stevenson, Seattle, Wash. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel by Dr. Alton M. Washington. WILSON, Eleanor Atkins, 86, of Shawsville, formerly of Blacksburg, died Thursday, December 15, 1994 at Meadowbrooke Nursing Home. Mrs. Wilson was born November 22, 1908, a daughter of the late George S. and Alice Rector Atkins. She was the widow of I. D. Wilson. Survivors include one niece, Katherine Mattocks; and one nephew, Lee Atkins, both of Charlotte, N.C. WYATT, Ruth Elizabeth Magnuson, 93, of Vinton, passed away Friday, December 16, 1994, at Berkshire Health Care Center, Vinton. She was the widow of Hobson Hugh Wyatt. Surviving are five grandchildren, Edwin R. Hastings, Vinton, Gregory W. Hastings, Roanoke, Donna L. Hastings, Harrisonburg, Deborah D. Speirs, Roanoke, Diane E.
