"He got trapped and just couldn't get out," said Henry County Sheriff's Investigator D.J. Holt.
Gieser "Mickey" Tomlin, 31, of Ridgeway and Wallace Ferrell, 40, of Martinsville were asleep when fire broke out just before 6 a.m. in the flue of a wood-burning stove in the kitchen, Holt said. Ferrell, who did not live in the trailer, broke a window and escaped without injury.
Holt said the trailer, which Tomlin was renting from Mary Mitchell, was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
No foul play was involved, Holt said. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of Tomlin's death.
