5 CAVS EARN ALL-REGION SOCCER HONORS

Five University of Virginia soccer players were chosen to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America all-region team announced Thursday.

Forward A.J. Wood, midfielder Mike Fisher and defender Brandon Pollard were first-team selections. Midfielder Damian Silvera was chosen for the second team, and forward Nate Friends made the third team.

Wood was chosen the national player of the year by Soccer America magazine. He led the Cavaliers to their fourth consecutive NCAA title this season with 23 goals and 54 points, both school records.

In other sports in the region:

Oak Hill Academy - USA Today's top-ranked high school basketball team - will play Tuesday night at Carroll County HIgh in a 7:30 tipoff against Queensland, Australia. In a 6:30 preliminary game, the Queensland girls' team will meet a team of area girls' high school players from Carroll County, Richlands, Grayson County and Galax.

Tickets are $10 at the door.

The Roanoke Express signed goaltender John Bradley to an East Coast Hockey League contract.

Bradley replaces Dave Gagnon, who was recalled by the Minnesota Moose of the International Hockey League.

Bradley has a career record of 42-24-7 in three seasons in the ECHL with Erie and Johnstown.

Virginia Tech will play host to more than 1,700 high school track and field athletes this weekend in the Domino's AllSport Invitational meet at Rector Field House.

More than 100 schools from seven states will be represented.
