Veterinarians (and the American Veterinary Medical Association), humane societies, legislators, celebrities and others have signed on to help stop pet overpopulation. Safe Brands Corp. (manufacturer of Sierra Antifreeze) and PETCO are corporate sponsors.
Between 14 million and 17 million cats and dogs - about one fourth of all domestic animals - are euthanized every year. Another 10 million stray and abandoned animals die on the streets and in rural communities, suffering from abuse and neglect.
Spay Day was designed to encourage Americans to take one dog or cat to a veterinarian to have the animal spayed or neutered. The Doris Day Animal League is offering information kits to help people organize local Spay Day USA events. The Animal League also is working with many animal welfare organizations to implement special programs on Feb. 28.
For more information, contact the Doris Day Animal League, Suite 100, 227 Massachusetts Ave., N.E., Washington, D.C. 20002. Or call (202) 546-1761.
