TECH STUDENT CHARGED IN BOMB THREATS

Virginia Tech Police have charged a graduate student with making two bomb threats against the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Someone called the Police Department twice on Nov. 17 warning that a bomb was set to go off at the college at 7:45 p.m, said Sgt. Jerry Olinger. The calls were received at 4:12 p.m. and 5:24 p.m.

The building was evacuated and closed for the evening and students taking exams were moved to another building, Olinger said.

Through an investigation that included a review of tapes of the telephone calls, Tech police charged Frank Garrett Edwards, a graduate student in Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences.

Edwards, 25, lives in Blacksburg but is originally from the Smithfield area, Olinger said.

Edwards turned himself in Friday and will be arraigned on the charges today in the Blacksburg division of Montgomery County General District Court.
