VINTON COUNCIL AUTHORIZES SEWER LINE STUDY

Vinton Town Council, hoping to avoid problems with future growth in the eastern part of town and adjoining Roanoke County, has authorized a study of the Wolf Creek sewer interceptor line.

Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday authorized Town Manager Clay Goodman to negotiate a contract with Mattern & Craig, a Roanoke consulting engineering firm, to determine the line's potential.

Council also authorized spending up to $15,000 for the study, which will take about six months.

Greg Secrist, town engineer, said the study also will consider the possibility of replacing the Hardy Road pumping station with a gravity line to the Niagara pumping station on the Roanoke River. Operating one pumping station instead of two would save money.

The study of the Wolf Creek interceptor line will determine the flow and capacity of the line and what its flow might be from future business and residential development.

Because Vinton is part of the county, its sewer interceptor lines would be used to handled sewage and waste water in surrounding areas of the county.

Secrist said the Wolf Creek interceptor is not in danger of being pushed to its capacity. Council members just want to get some idea if that could happen with future development in the area.

Council members also recognized Michael W. Stovall, who came to say "good bye" and "thank you."

Stovall was a Vinton police detective who recently was elected as the Vinton Magisterial District's representative on the Roanoke County School Board. He resigned from the police department to set up his own security company.

Stovall said he came to bid "good bye" to his former police job and say "thank you" for the good life he has had so far in Vinton.

The town is a good place, he said, and he will be a Vinton resident for a long time.
