The school where Danny Manning started his career met the school where George Lynch began his career.
Lynch's alma mater won.
Brooks Berry scored 21 points as Patrick Henry defeated Page of Greensboro, N.C., 60-55 on Saturday night in the third game of the Crestar Roundball Classic at the Salem Civic Center
The victory was the 200th for Woody Deans, the Patriots' coach. In 12 years at Patrick Henry, Deans has won two state titles - one with Lynch in 1988 and one with Curtis Staples leading the way in 1992.
Deans says the 200th victory doesn't mean as much as the fact that it was the third in a row for his Patriots (6-8).
``We're working hard and we're coming on,'' he said.
Berry is the PH player who is really emerging. The junior scored 11 of his 21 points in the third period as the Patriots turned a two-point halftime deficit into a 50-40 lead.
``Berry is starting to play like he's capable of playing,'' Deans said.
PH, which made its first nine shots of the third period, hit 10 of 14 (71.4 percent) in the quarter.
Page, which won 4A state titles in North Carolina with Manning in 1983 and with the University of North Carolina's Pearce Landry in 1993, closed to 58-55 with 2 minutes, 1 second remaining.
The Pirates had a chance to cut their deficit to one or tie on their next possession, but 3-point attempts by Michael Horney and Henry Smith were off the mark.
Brian Jackson sealed the victory for the Patriots when he hit two free throws with 26.5 seconds remaining.
Steve Hankins, Page's coach, wanted his players to go for two not three.
``We don't have that,'' Hankins said of a 3-point shooter. ``If we had somebody who made 60 or 70 percent when they're wide-open, maybe we would take more of them. But we don't.''
Hankins, in his second year as the Page coach, praised Deans.
``Gosh they're well-coached,'' Hankins said. ``He's got them doing what he wants them to do. They're strong and physical, too. What do they have here in Virginia? Weightlifting 1, Weightlifting 2 and Weightlifting 3? All of their kids have muscles.''
Patrick Henry's Chris Combs, who is Duke-bound in football, complemented Berry with 16 points and six rebounds.
