Hawkes, a 6-foot-1, 218-pound linebacker from Nottoway High School, was selected the defensive player of the year in Region I and was first-team All-Group AA on offense and defense as chosen by the state coaches' association.
Hawkes had more than 100 tackles as a junior and had more receptions than any tight end in the region, coach Joe May said. Nottoway reached the Group AA Division 3 semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Handley.
Hawkes is the ninth player to commit to Tech and the fifth this week.
Virginia Tech remains the team to beat for Sussex Central defensive back Tyron Edmond, although Virginia brought Edmond to campus for an official visit Wednesday. Edmond is the lone uncommitted player on the Roanoke Times & World-News list of the top 25 prospects in the state.
