She was born and raised in Hopkinsville, Ky., but Virginia Tech's new senior vice president and provost has roots in the Shenandoah Valley.
Early in her tenure at Tech, she traveled to Woodstock, where local officials helped her track down her ancestors.
They pulled out a ledger dating to 1792 that listed Daniel Sisk and Rebecca Loving.
``They had five sons, and one of those sons came to Kentucky,'' Meszaros said. That's where her branch of the family began.
``There had always been a legend in the family that an ancestor had been a hero in the Battle of Kings Mountain,'' she said. The battle in South Carolina in 1780 was a major victory for the American soldiers, including many from Virginia.
``Part of the legend was that there was a monument with our ancestor's name on it on this battleground.''
She went to find it, ``and his name was there, with thousands of others.''
