TIMESLAND WRESTLING TEAMS SEEKING ANSWERS, TITLES

Will William Byrd or Northside come out on top in the Region III wrestling tournament this weekend at Rustburg High School?

Will Franklin County extend its streak of titles in the Northwestern Region when the Eagles play host to that tournament?

One question that isn't hard to answer is: Who will win the Region IV tournament at Carroll County High School? If you haven't then you're almost certain to be right.

In the Region C tournament at Bath County High School, James River and Glenvar appear to be the favorites in the field of 10 teams.

William Byrd, after losing a tough regular-season dual meet to Northside, beat the Vikings by 141/2 points Saturday in the Blue Ridge District tournament. The Terriers won by 141/2 points. The Terriers also beat Northside by 171/2 points to finish second in the Big Orange.

``I think it's tougher to beat them in a bigger tournament. It just changes the perspective a little bit,'' said Byrd coach Barry Trent.

The Terriers haven't won the region since 1987. This year, Byrd pins its hopes on Pat Henderson (152), David Anderson (125) and Corey Walker (103), Blue Ridge District champions all.

Although Brookville is usually a power in Region III, Northside and Byrd beat the Bees in dual meets.

Franklin County finished second in the Group AAA duals and won the Northwestern Region duals title. That and tradition would seem to make the Eagles a lock for the team title this weekend.

``Not necessarily,'' said Franklin County coach Kris Kahila. ``We've got a bunch sick and hurt. We usually have good luck about our health. Right now it's not going the way I want it to.''

The Eagles had six Roanoke Valley District champions. Franklin County's most consistent wrestler recently has been 103-pounder Trung Nguyen, who won the district, scored two pins and a major fall in the state duals and had three pins in the Northwestern Region duals.

Pulaski County, which was the district runner-up, could do well in the region, and William Fleming 135-pounder Herbie Kasey, who was fourth in the state a year ago, is unbeaten this season.

In Region IV, Grundy's entire team qualified. The Golden Wave will be seeking its ninth consecutive Group AA championship after regionals.

There are only 10 teams from three districts in Region C, so it's hard to get a reading on the competition. James River and Glenvar are from the Pioneer District, which is represented by five of the teams.
