Altavista (16-6) will play Brookville, a 66-61 winner over Appomattox, at 7 p.m. today at the Vines Center for the tournament championship and a berth in the the Region III tournament. Liberty had clinched a berth as the regular-season champion.
The Minutemen (19-3) took a 57-56 lead on a field goal by J.J. Coles, who led Liberty with 14 points.
Payne then attempted a shot with about five seconds left, but missed. After several tips, there was a wild scramble for the ball underneath the basket. Payne, who scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, came up with the ball and made the game-winner.
Liberty had chances to put away Altavista in the fourth quarter, but Coles and Cris Ridgeway, who scored 13 points, missed the front end of one-and-ones.
The Minutemen's center, Stephen Shrader, spent much of the game on the bench in foul trouble and fouled out with two minutes left. He scored 11 points
The Colonels were led by Dennis Brown, who scored a game-high 20 points. Dexter Woodruff added 15.
Pioneer
Glenvar 70, Covington 51: In Clifton Forge, the Cougars managed to sweep the Highlanders in the regular season, but Glenvar got the best of Covington in their postseason meeting at the Dabney Lancaster Community College. The Highlanders earned a meeting with Parry McCluer in the final at 7:30 p.m. today.
The Highlanders bolted to a 17-5 lead. The Cougars closed to 33-31 in the third quarter, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
Glenvar and Parry McCluer advance to the Region C Tournament .
James Williams scored a game-high 21 points for the Highlanders (14-7). Nick Varney, Josh Williamson and Corey Willis each scored 12 points.
Robert Roman led Covington (13-8) with 17 points and Brian Holloway added 13.
Parry McCluer 57, Bath County 51: In Clifton Forge, the Fighting Blues scored the final six points to down the Chargers in a semifinal at Dabney Lancaster Community College.
With the score tied at 51 with 1 minute, 22 seconds remaining, Parry McCluer held the ball, causing Bath to foul. The Fighting Blues sank four free throws and Brandon Garrett threw down a dunk as the buzzer sounded for the final score.
Mike McElroy led Parry McCluer (17-6) with a game-high 18 points. David Coleman scored 10 points for the Blues, and Garrett finished with nine.
Jon Rodgers was the leading scorer for Bath County (15-6), pouring in 12 points and Chris Phillips tossed in 11. David Buzzard added 10 for the Chargers.
Mountain Empire
Narrows 77, Rocky Gap 73: In Wytheville, the Green Wave battled back from a four-point halftime deficit to defeat the Eagles in the championship game.
Brian Pruitt led Narrows with 27 points. The Green Wave got 14 from Scott Vaught, 13 from Patrick Bailey and 12 from Norman Perkins.
Kelly DeHart had 18 points for Auburn (13-9). Tracy Bradshaw added 15, Nathan Blessing 13 and Eric Faulkner 11. Kevin DeHart hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the final margin from seven points to four.
Narrows opened its lead in the third quarter, with all five starters contributing.
The Green Wave (14-9) advances to the Region C tournament against Lebanon, and regular-season champion Grayson County also has a berth.
Piedmont
Laurel Park 58, Fieldale-Collinsville 42: In Bassett, the Lancers held the Cavaliers to 13 points in the second half to earn a berth in the tournament final, as well as the Region III Tournament.
Laurel Park will face regular-season champion Martinsville at 7:30 p.m. today at Bassett High School.
Darrell Wilson scored a game-high 14 points for the Lancers, who trailed 29-28 at halftime. Warrick Scott tossed in 13 points and Rashad Wall added 11 for Laurel Park (17-5).
Brad Harmon was the high scorer for Fieldale-Collinsville (16-7), with 11 points, and Delvin Joyce and Brian Alley each added 10.
VIC
Carlisle 66, Miller School 63: In Lynchburg, Rod Mitchell scored on an offensive rebound with about four minutes left to give the Chiefs (21-2) the lead for good as Carlisle advanced to the championship game tonight against Eastern Mennonite.
Mitchell scored six of his 17 points in the last four minutes, and Joseph McClinton scored six of his 15 in the final four minutes to lift Carlisle (21-2).
Bryant Redd added 12 points for the Chiefs.
Hogoheegee
George Wythe 59, PH-Glade Spring 49: Aaron Andrews scored 19 points, and the Maroons (19-5) pulled away from the Rebels to win the title and clinch a berth in the Region C tournament.
PH-Glade Spring played a delay game, looking for back-door cuts, but George Wythe (19-5) managed to thwart that strategy.
The Rebels were led by Eric Reynolds with 18 points and Chris Castle with 15.
Jon Ervin added 17 points for the Maroons.
