RAPE CHARGE CERTIFIED IN SALEM INCIDENT

A Salem Juvenile and Domestic judge certified rape charges against a former William Byrd High School basketball star at a preliminary hearing Monday.

Paul A. Jordan, 23, is charged with raping a 15-year-old girl in a Roanoke College dormitory room at 355 Campus Lane early Dec. 3.

Neither Jordan nor the girl was a Roanoke College student.

Jordan and the girl were both visiting the campus that weekend. Jordan was there to see a friend, and the girl was visiting her sister.

The two met that Friday night at a party.

In an interview after his arrest, Jordan - who recently finished a tour with the Navy - did not deny having sex with the girl. However, he did deny her charge of rape.

After hearing the victim's testimony, the rape charge was certified to a May grand jury, Salem Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Skip Lautenschlager said.
