The department is holding a series of meetings around the state as it considers revising its standards for streets that are built by private developers but eventually become part of the state's secondary highway system.
The standards include requirements for width of streets, sharpness of curves and materials used in construction. They are aimed at ensuring the adequacy and safety for the traffic the streets are planned to serve.
The department said it wants to revise the standards to meet local needs, particularly in historic, environmentally sensitive and other special districts. A committee of county government representatives and developers is helping the department draw up the standards.
Tuesday's three-hour meeting at the department's Salem District Office at 731 Harrison Ave. will begin at 1 p.m. A similar meeting is planned in Abingdon on Monday.
