A 12-inch pipe broke about 2 a.m. Friday in the 7600 block of Williamson Road, according to city public information officer Michelle Bono.
Businesses on Planation Road, including the First Union National Bank operations center, and on Williamson Road lost water until about 11:30 a.m.
An electrical problem at the Hollins pumping station compounded the water shortage, Bono said.
By lunchtime, one of the station's pumps was functioning, and water had been restored to most buildings.
