HOKIES WIN TOURNAMENT OPENER 10-4

Virginia Tech rode the pitching of Sean Hummel and a 12-hit attack to a 10-4 baseball victory over East Carolina at the Bojangles-Seahawk Challenge in Wilmington, N.C.

The Hokies (3-2) broke open a close game by scoring six runs in the seventh inning. Two of those runs scored on wild pitches by reliever John Payne. Tech also got RBI singles from Kevin Kurilla and former William Byrd High School standout Matt Reynolds, along with a run-scoring double from Kevin Barker.

Hummel (1-0), making his first college start after two seasons as a reliever, pitched 62/3 innings, giving up seven hits and striking out five.

In other sports in the region:

Joe Raccuia hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as Radford beat Akron 6-5 in the second game of a baseball doubleheader in Radford.

The Highlanders (5-5) took a 5-2 lead in the second inning on a two-run double by Eric Hungate. Akron countered in the third by scoring two runs, and added one in the sixth before Raccuia's game-winning hit. Freshman J.W. Salyers (1-0) picked up the victory for the Highlanders in relief.

In the first game, Dave Yoder pitched 62/3 innings to pick up the victory as Akron won 6-3. Bill Brennan, Rob McCandless and Raccuia each went 2-for-3 for Radford.

Ryan Glynn pitched a complete game and went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a home run to lift VMI over Furman 7-3.

Glynn (2-1) gave up three runs on eight hits in eight innings of work. Louie Napoleon lashed a two-run double in the third inning to give VMI a 4-1 lead. After Furman (4-7) cut it to 5-3 in the fifth, Glynn homered to lead off the seventh and the Keydets added an unearned run in the eighth.

In Lakeland, Fla., host Florida Southern overcame an eight-shot deficit on the final nine holes to edge second-round leader Virginia for the team title at the Imperial Lakes/Florida Southern Golf Classic.

Florida Southern shot a final-round 5-under-par 283 to finish with an 843 total, two strokes better than the Cavaliers.

Virginia's Jimmy Flippen shot a 71 and finished with a 205 total to win the individual title by one stroke over Augusta's Richard Johnson.

Virginia Tech finished 11th in the team standings in the tournament, which featured 10 of the nation's Top 20 teams. Curtis Deal led the Hokies with a 215 total, good for 18th place.

VMI and Appalachian State made league history by tying for the team championship at the Southern Conference Wrestling Tournament in Asheville, N.C.

Both teams accumulated 99.5 points, marking the first time in league history two teams have shared the title. Tennessee-Chattanooga (88.5 points) was third, and The Citadel (31) finished fourth.

Kevin Johnson from VMI was named freshman of the year, and the Keydets' John Trudgeon was named coach of the year. The Keydets led all schools by winning four individual championships: Adam Mickiewicz (134 pounds), Charlie Branch (142), Jeremy Ingram (150) and Kevin Johnson (158).
