BIG LICK WHEELS

``From Big Lick To Roanoke,'' a special educational event at The Virginia Transportation Museum, will be held April 24-28 with activities daily from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

This event will depict transportation history in the Roanoke Valley from the 1840s to 1880s. Students will travel a wagon road simulating the Great Wagon Road through Salem and learn about the coming of the railroad to Big Lick.

Special features include: a Conestoga wagon, a wheel-making and harness-making demonstration, period interpreters, hands-on activities and how the coming of the railroad transformed the hamlet of Big Lick to Roanoke. Traditions of the period will be celebrated and students will participate in the laying of railroad tracks.

Activities will be geared toward grade levels as follows: Monday and Tuesday, preschool-first grade; Wednesday and Thursday, grades 2-4; Friday, grades 5-6.

The event is co-sponsored by the Blue Ridge Institute of Ferrum College. Call 342-5670.
