RELIGION BRIEFS

ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Elm at Jefferson in downtown Roanoke, has special Lenten classes on Sunday mornings at 10:15 and on Wednesday nights at 7. The evening classes focus on teaching Christian values to children and the spirituality of the Lord's Prayer. Call 343-9341 for a full schedule and to register for meals during some of the classes.

A PRE-EASTER PROGRAM, ``The Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus,'' will be presented Saturday at 7 p.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church, 1513 Rorer Ave. S.W. Participants will come from Bethlehem Bible College, and music will be by the English Family of Bedford and other singing groups.

THE REV. NELSON HARRIS, chairman of the Roanoke School Board and pastor of Ridgewood Baptist Church, will speak March 17 at the 8:15 p.m. service at Beth Israel Synagogue, 920 Franklin Road S.W. Harris, who also is president of the interfaith Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference, will discuss "Church and State Issues."

JERUSALEM BAPTIST CHURCH, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., will sponsor a March 19 concert featuring the pastor, the Rev. J. Eugene Young, and the Rev. Dwight O. Steele Jr., pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church. The concert is at at 7 p.m.

EVENING LENTEN SERVICES are in progress each Wednesday through April 12 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1008 Franklin Road S.W. The Gospel of Luke will be the theme of the services, which will begin with supper at 6. A donation is requested for the meal.

Those who cannot drive at night may call 344-9051 by noon Wednesdays for a ride.

CAVE SPRING UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 4505 Hazel Drive S.W., has planned a Spiritual Life Weekend, beginning March 18 at 6 p.m. Capt. Richard A. Flick, a Navy chaplain stationed in Miramar, Calif., and his wife, Fran, will lead the weekend event.

The opening session will be followed by services at 8:45 and 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday. The leader's wife will speak at a Monday luncheon at noon. Call 989-3673 for meal reservations and a full schedule.

CHRIST LUTHERAN and ST. JOHN LUTHERAN churches will have a joint Lenten study Wednesday at Roanoke College's Antrim Chapel. The service will include a dramatic presentation by Al Staggs on the ministry of German martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Reservations for the 5:30 p.m. meal are needed by Sunday and may be made by sending a check for $3 per person payable to the college in Salem.

``AFRICAN CHURCHES SPEAK'' will be the theme of a program Sunday at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, 402 Second St. in downtown Roanoke. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a potluck supper, it will feature a former missionary, the Rev. Dr. Willy N. Heggoy, a native of Norway who now lives in Thaxton. He just returned from Africa.

OUR LADY OF NAZARETH CATHOLIC PARISH has chosen Operation Rice Bowl as a Lenten project. For the next four weeks, members will use the bowls to collect coins for an agricultural school in the African country of Guinea.

MISSIONARIES TO BOLIVIA, the Rev. Randy Bynum and his wife, Kathy, will speak Sunday at the 10:35 a.m. service at First Church of the Nazarene, 728 Highland Ave. S.E.

The family, which includes three children, has lived in the South American country for 10 years. The Bynums are on furlough in Idaho.

THE KINGERYS, a gospel singing group, will perform Sunday at 10 and 11 a.m. at Grandview Heights Church of the Nazarene, 2308 Highland Road S.E. Call 427-5564 for more information.
