HORTON WINS NATIONAL TITLE IN SWIMMING

Kat Horton became the first swimmer in Hollins College history to win an individual national championship in swimming Friday.

Horton's time of 57.72 seconds was good enough for first place in the 100-meter butterfly at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving National Championships held at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.

In others sports news in the region:

Liberty University football coach Sam Rutigliano announced Friday the hiring of George MacIntyre as defensive coordinator, replacing Jerry Petercuskie, who left for a position on the staff at Virginia.

MacIntyre was head coach at Vanderbilt (1978-85) and Tennessee-Martin (1975-77) and was an assistant at Miami, Tampa, Clemson, Vanderbilt and Mississippi.

Lewis Chitengwa, a freshman from Virginia, shot a two-under par 70 to share the lead with two others at the Golf Digest Collegiate Invitational held at the Tournament Players Course in The Woodlands, Texas.

Chris Tidland from Oklahoma State and Bob Murray of North Carolina also fired 70s with Tidland's performance leading the Cowboys to the top after the first round with a 287. Chitengwa's round paced the Cavaliers, who are tied for fifth place with Oklahoma at 296 in an 18-team field that features eight of the nation's top 10 teams and 15 of the top 20. Simon Cooke aided the Wahoo cause with a 74 and Jimmy Flippen and Cole Kelly each fired 76s for Virginia.

VMI pounded out nine runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth inning on the way to a 15-1 baseball victory over Juniata College at Patchin Field in Lexington.

The Keydets (5-8) benefited from two errors and four walks to score their nine runs. Franco Martin had a double and a single in the eighth inning to aid the Keydet cause and Joey Schenk went the distance, striking out nine and walking three while giving up five hits.

In Ferrum, Chad Maddox belted a two-out grand slam in the sixth inning to ignite the Panthers to a 19-7 baseball victory over Lindenwood (Mo.).

The home run erased a 6-5 Ferrum deficit and sent the Panthers to their seventh victory in nine games. David Jones was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, John Poindexter had two hits and four RBI and Todd Cunningham went 3-for-5 for Ferrum.
