HAMPDEN-SYDNEY MEN FALL 99-85

Ernie Peavy scored 24 points, and John Paulsen added 10 in a crucial first-half run Saturday, as Wisconsin-Platteville beat Hampden-Sydney 99-85 for the Division III South Sectional basketball championship.

Wisconsin-Platteville (29-0) led 27-25 with 6 minutes, 40 seconds left in the first half when Peavy started a 21-9 run by hitting a free throw, the first of his seven consecutive points. Paulsen followed with back-to-back 3-pointers and finished the run with a pair of inside scores for a 48-34 halftime lead.

Hamdpen-Sydney (28-3) cut the lead to 69-61 with 10:47 left, but the Pioneers responded with a jumper from Scott Borroughs and a 3-pointer from Tim O'Connell to push their lead to 74-61 with 9:31 left.

Nate Schwab led the Tigers with 25 points, Jason Leonard had 22 and Ryan Odom 10.

The Pioneers will play the winner of the Midwest Sectional on March 17 in the Division III semifinals in Buffalo, N.Y.
