WASHINGTON - President Clinton turned to a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, Vietnam and Washington strategy sessions to lead the Marine Corps for the next four years.
Clinton announced his plans to nominate Lt. Gen. Charles C. Krulak, 53, as his choice to succeed Gen. Carl Mundy Jr. as Marine Corps commandant. Mundy retires July 1.
Krulak currently commands the Marines in the Pacific from Camp H.M. Smith in Hawaii. ``He brings to the job of commandant a dynamic vision of the Marine Corps' future, a wealth of experience and a highly effective leadership and managerial style,'' Clinton said in a statement.
The announcement of Krulak's nomination, which must be confirmed by the Senate, was timed to coincide with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima early today. Krulak and Mundy were attending the ceremony on the Pacific island.
