RELIGION BRIEFS

ROANOKE AREA MINISTRIES, an interfaith service agency, will sponsor a concert March 26 at 2 p.m. at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 809 Orange Ave. N.W. The church's gospel choir will sing. Proceeds will be used to repair the commercial dishwasher used at RAM's day shelter. Other donations also are needed for the appliance and may be sent to RAM at 824 Campbell Ave. S.W., Roanoke, 24016.

CHURCHES OF THE BRETHREN will unite April 2-5 to sponsor Lenten renewal services, known as Awakening. The services will be held at Central Church, 416 Church Ave. S.W. in downtown Roanoke with the Rev. Bob Kettering, of Mannheim, Pa., as the guest preacher.

He is a former Pennsylvania pastor and district executive. Special music will begin at 7:15 p.m. Child care will be provided. This is the 13th year for Awakening.

SINGLENESS: BLESSING OR CURSE? is the theme of a seminar Friday at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 515 Third St. S.W. in Room 220. The seminar will include a panel discussion with opportunity for single adults to discuss their lifestyle.

The Rev. Ed Kohl, minister to singles, will be resource person. The program follows a potluck meal. Call 224-3370 for more information.

FIVE INDUSTRIAL CHAPLAINS, volunteers with the ecumenical Institute of Industrial and Commercial Ministries, Inc., are serving government offices and an auto dealership in the Roanoke Valley.

The chaplains are the Revs. Robin Colwell, Richard L. McNutt, Charles Gwaltney, Ronald E. Hoppaugh and Paul Lancaster. They are among 192 chaplains nationally who offer emotional and spiritual support to workers on the job.

GRACE BAPTIST TEMPLE,1527 Gilford Road N.W., opens its annual Mini-Mission Conference Saturday with dinner at 6 p.m. Jim O'Neal, a missionary to the Philippines, will speak after the supper and again on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

HAITIAN ROMAN CATHOLICS living in the Roanoke Valley are being served by an adapted service at St. Gerard Church, 809 Orange Ave. N.W. The Rev. Wayne Ball, pastor, speaks French, which many from the Caribbean country understand, and has obtained some materials in Creole. An estimated 30 Haitians are part of the congregation.

Another group of Haitians is meeting each Sunday at Ridgewood Baptist Church on Hemlock Road Northwest.

THE ROANOKE CHAMBER SINGERS, directed by Frank Morris, will present a musicale, "300 Years of Choral Music" for Lent and Holy Week on March 25 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 2105 S. Jefferson St.

DAVID FITZGERALD, formerly of Louisville, Ky., has begun his work as director of music at Grandin Court Baptist Church. He succeeds Sally Goff, who retired more than a year ago. Jim McConnell has been interim director.

THE REV. DAVID YINGLING, pastor of Central Church of the Brethren, along with Jean Fallon and Becky Rhodes, is on a 13-day trip to France for a spiritual retreat at the Taize Community. The community, founded in 1940, is known for its innovative liturgy and simple music used in many churches. The three Roanoke Valley residents are part of a tour from seminaries in Earlham, Ind.

JERUSALEM BAPTIST CHURCH, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., has scheduled its sixth annual Black and White Musical for March 26 at 5 p.m. James Tucker will be master of ceremonies. The J. Eugene Young Mass Choir is sponsor.

THE REV. DAVID TANNER of Trinity United Methodist Church and the REV. LOUIS TIMMONS of Highland Park United Methodist will exchange pulpits for 11 a.m. services on March 26. Both parishes in Old Southwest Roanoke support inner city ministries.

A POWHATAN INDIAN, Sun Eagle, and his wife, Gentle Wind, of the Mattaponi Reservation near Richmond, will speak Sunday at 9:30 and 11 a.m. at Roanoke Unitarian Universalist Church, 2015 Grandin Road S.W. Other guests from the reservation also plan to be at the service, which will focus on American Indian spirituality.

FRANK PLECITY, who recently returned from a work mission in Haiti, will speak March 22 at 6:45 p.m. at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road S.W.

THE VIRGINIANS, a gospel music group, will perform Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Garden City Baptist Church, 3536 Garden City Blvd. S.E. An offering will be taken, and a nursery will be staffed.

REVIVAL SERVICES are in progress through Friday at Evangel Foursquare Church, 612 Bullitt Ave. S.E. Preaching at 7 p.m. is Evangelist Richard Moore with Rodney Howard-Browne assisting.
