TOP GUN TENNIS TEAM GOT SUCCESS IT DIDN'T EXPECT|

Sometimes success comes when it is not expected. Take the Top Gun tennis team, for example.

Top Gun, champions of the Radford/New River Valley World TeamTennis League, finished second in the 4.5 Division of Southeastern Regional World TeamTennis tournament this month in Bradenton, Fla.

All this happened even though Top Gun was without three of its regulars and a two other players recovering from injury.

GENE HURST of Pulaski had to play singles because of the absences and won two of three matches. Team captain JOAN KALNITSKY of Blacksburg won all four of her singles matches, three of four women's doubles matches with KAREN CRONIN and all three mixed-doubles matches with MIKE CRONIN of Elliston, who was recovering from a pulled calf muscle. SHERRY VINES of Richmond - who was recovering from surgery - and Karen Cronin also played well in their respective mixed-doubles matches.

As a result, only Geneva, Fla., beat out Top Gun in the regionals. Other teams in the competition were Kissimmee, Fla.; Bayonne, N.J.; and Sumter, S.C.

Top Gun next plays in the national championships in Charlotte, N.C., in August. The top two finishers from the six regionals will battle for the title.

World TeamTennis was developed by Billie Jean King. It involves one set of play in men's and women's singles and men's and women's doubles, and two mixed doubles. The team with the highest total of games won in the six sets is the winner.

SWIMMING ALONG: Success wasn't totally unexpected for the Southwest Aquatic Team. But it was just as sweet for SWAT as it won the Greater Sunbelt YMCA Championships at Virginia Tech's War Memorial Pool.

SWAT amassed more than 200 points more than the runner-up, arch-rival Roanoke Valley Swim Club, 1,026-808.

Fast competition produced several team records. MARLANA COMPTON set new Girls 6-and-under records in the 50-meter freestyle and 50 breaststroke. YVONNE NG rewrote the team's record book in Girls 8-and-under with records in five events. She set records while winning the 25 and 50 butterfly, finishing second in the 25 freestyle, third in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 25 backstroke.

Ng was also third in the 50 backstroke. And both she and Compton were on the 100 medley relay team that placed third. Twenty-four other swimmers and seven other relay teams won medals for SWAT with top three finishers.
