The Hokies (14-7), who had 24 hits, tied a school record with eight doubles.
David Fitt led the Hokies with a home run and five runs batted in. John Mader added three hits and four RBI, and Bo Durkac had three hits - all doubles - and two RBI. After Appalachian State (8-16-1) scored two runs in the first inning, the Hokies added five in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Hokies picked up six more runs in the third and two in the fifth before blowing open the game with an eight-run eighth inning.
Denny Wagner (2-0) picked up the win after pitching six innings and giving up three runs on seven hits. Gart Armstrong (2-4) took the loss.

Kurt Mueller scored five goals and Sean Miller had eight assists as Virginia routed Radford 32-1 in a men's lacrosse game in Charlottesville. The third-ranked Cavaliers (6-1) opened an 8-0 lead before Zack Farantonis scored for Radford (3-5).
Seventh-ranked Roanoke won its third straight men's lacrosse game, 15-9 over Trinity (Conn.) in Salem.
Roanoke (6-2) was led by junior attack Kevin Tersolo, who had five goals, including three in a 45-second span to open the second half.
Freshman Dan Keating had three goals and sophomore Jeff Jones had two goals and two assists for the Maroons. Sophomore goalie Chris Gordon recorded 18 saves, including 13 in the second half.
Joe Lerner had two goals and an assist to lead Trinity (3-2).
Washington and Lee's Nicole Ripken scored a free position goal with 1:24 left in the game and Brook Glenn made three one-on-one saves in the last two minutes as the Generals downed Colby College 6-5 in a women's lacrosse game in Lexington.
The Generals (6-2) trailed 3-1 after Colby's Amie Sicchitano scored an unassisted goal at the 15-minute mark, but Washington and Lee came back behind Ripken and Lindsay Coleman. Coleman scored with 12:06 left in the first half and Ripken's goal with 10:40 left tied the score at 3
After Colby (0-2) took a 5-4 lead in the second half, Coleman tied the score with 6:35 left in the game. With 1:24 left, Ripken was fouled after taking a pass in front of the goal and converted the free position goal which proved to be the game-winner. Glenn finished with 11 saves.
David Groseclose went 3-for-5, drove in two runs and scored a run to lead VMI past Liberty 8-6 in a non-conference baseball game in Lynchburg.
Franco Martin, Louie Napoleon, Nate Shepperson, and Dale Moore each had two hits for the Keydets (11-15), who handed the Flames (14-4) their third straight loss and first defeat at home this season. Pete Kokois pitched 12/3 innings in relief to pick up the win and Ryan Glynn went 21/3 innings to pick up his second save.
John Poindexter went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lift Ferrum past Oneonta State 7-5 in a non-conference baseball game in Ferrum.
Todd Cunningham went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Chuck Jarrett went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Panthers (17-5). Brian Ferguson (3-1) picked up the win in relief.
Ferrum used Robin Sutphin's hitting and pitching to sweep both games of a doubleheader against Dixie Conference foe Shenandoah, 9-4 and 14-6, in Ferrum.
Sutphin was the winning pitcher in both games for the Panthers. At the plate, she went 1-for-1 in the first game with an RBI and walked three times. In the second game, Sutphin was 1-for-2 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Katie Chapman, Julie Shifflett, and Betsy Forbes each had two hits in the second game.
Ferrum's Ed Alvarez closed with a 76 for a two-round total of 151 to finish first individually at the Bluefield College Invitational golf tournament.
The Panthers shot a two-round total of 636 to finish second in the team competition, 11 strokes behind winner Bluefield.
