Representatives for districts A, C and D will be elected in the fall of 1997, making the School Board a fully elected seven-member board. The Christiansburg and Blacksburg seats will be abolished Jan. 1, 1998, to bring the election districts in line with those of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.
Although School Board candidates can be endorsed by a political party, they cannot be nominated by a particular party. All candidates must be nonpartisan.
Anyone interested in becoming a School Board candidate must meet several guidelines set forth by the Virginia State Board of Elections. Here are just a few of those requirements:
Candidates must submit a petition signed by at least 125 qualified voters within that candidate's district by June 13. The State Board recommends an additional 60 signatures to assure that enough signers are qualified voters.
A declaration of candidacy must be filed with the petition by June 13 at the county registrar's office in Christiansburg.
Pre-election and post-election reports of campaign contributions must be filed regularly with the county registrar, even if no money is collected. The deadlines for pre-election filings are April 15, June 5 and July 15.
For more information, call the county registrar at 382-5741 or the State Board of Elections at (800) 552-9745.
The Board of Supervisors will appoint its last two School Board members in May, to represent District C and the town of Blacksburg. Those wishing to apply for appointment for either seat must do so by Monday. Appointments will be made May 22 and will become effective July 1.
