He is survived by his sisters and brother-in-law, Opal Atkinson, Roanoke, Doris L. and John Eakin, Roanoke; brother, Herbert Atkinson, Roanoke; brother-in-law, Joseph West, Tampa, Fla.; one niece and four nephews; a devoted friend, Juanita Fisher and family; several great-nieces and great-nephews. BREEDING, Madge Mutter, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Russell County, Va. and was the daughter of the late Dale and Myrtle Griffith Mutter, of the Belfast Community. She received her education at Emory and Henry College and was a member of Delta Rho Society. She was a retired educator, having taught in the Princess Anne County, Tazewell County, Russell County and Henrico County School Systems for more than thirty five years. She was a member of the Virginia Education Association and the Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Breeding was preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Breeding, a retired director of the Affirmative Action /Environmental Barriers Agency with the Department of Rehabilitative Services in Richmond, Va., and a brother, Wayne Mutter. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Danny C. McDaniel, of Wytheville; three loving grandchildren, Paul, Neal, and Meredith McDaniel, of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 1995 at the Barnett Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday or at the residence of her daughter at any time. CUSTER, Fred Bain, 86, of Pensacola Fla., died Tuesday, April 4, 1995 in a Pensacola hospital. Mr. Custer was born in Floyd County, Va. and had resided in Pensacola since 1951, being relocated by Du Pont. He later retired from Monsanto in 1973. He was a member of the Warrington Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Elma Custer, Pensacola, Fla.; daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda C. and Don Haley, Irmo, S.C., Annette C. and Russell Fortney, Pensacola, Fla., Kathleen C. and Gaylen Phillips, Pensacola, Fla.; grandchildren, Brian Haley, Laura Young, Doug Haley, Kris Jernigan, Marcy Custer, Kevin Edgar, Bain Custer; and three great-grandchildren. FERRELL, Julius Rosser, 74, of Montvale, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995 in Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. He was born October 15, 1920 in Bedford County and was the son of the late Julius Rosser Ferrell Sr. and Estell Bell Ferrell. He was a farmer and a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Betty Luck Ferrell; a son, Robert M. Ferrell, of Montvale; and two grandchildren, Benny R. Ferrell and R. Annette Ferrel. Funeral services will be conducted at the Walnut Grove Church, Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Elmer W. Sellers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. HENRY, Kathleen O., 85, of Moneta, died Monday, April 3, 1995, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a prolonged illness. She was born on January 8, 1910 in Appomattox. Afflicted at the age of six months with polio, the weakness in her limbs only served to strengthen her character and will in later years. Her reservoir of love was unlimited, freely given, and drawn upon often by her family and many friends. She was both the gentlest of souls and a tower of strength. She asked little for herself, but gave much to those around her. All who knew her are saddened by her passing, yet grateful that she touched their lives so gently and profoundly. She is survived by her husband, Frank S. Henry; daughter and son-in-law, Betty J. Buck and Jack M. Buck of Smith Mountain Lake; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald E. Henry and Shirley M. He nry of Williamsburg; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive visitors Wednesday, April 5, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem. Services will be Thursday at 12 noon with burial at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
HODGES, Rufus Forrest, 87, of Vinton, died Monday, April 3, 1995. He was a World War II veteran and had served with the US Army. He was preceded in death by a sister, Christine Hodges King. Surviving are his wife, Nellie Blankenship Hodges; one son, Douglas Forrest Hodges, Vinton; two daughters, Barbara Ellen Underwood, Vinton, Doris Alberta Hannabass, Roanoke; two brothers, Curtis Walter Hodges and Cletus James Hodges, both of Roanoke; four sisters, Ada Hodges Dobie, Gertrude Hodges Ridgeway, both of Roanoke, Mildred Hodges Shelley, Baltimore, Md., Mary Hodges McCallister, Lake City, Fla.; also seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. HUGHES, Dr. Charles Brock, 77, of Wytheville, died at his home, Tuesday, April 4, 1995. Dr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Mary Austin Campbell Hughes; three daughters, Mary Austin Hughes Hodges, Laura Lee Hughes Johnson, both of Wytheville, Suzanne Hughes Detlefs, Atlanta, Ga.; and two sons, Charles Brock Hughes III of New York, and Fitzgerald Campbell Hughes, Roanoke; and eight grandchildren. Dr. Hughes graduated from Emory University and from the University of Georgia School of Medicine. He took his internship at St. Mary's Catholic Hospital, Cincinnati and residency in Pediatrics at the University of Georgia School of Medicine. He was the first medical specialist to come to Wythe County, when he started his practice of Pediatric Medicine in 1949. Dr. Hughes was one of the few doctors practicing during the polio epidemic, which struck Wythe County in 1950. A life-long sports enthusiast, Dr. Hughes and two friends founded and coached the first Sandlot Basketball Program in Wytheville's public schools. He was a team physician for the George Wythe High School football and basketball team for 30 years. In 1992, Brock Hughes was selected by the Virginia High School Coaches Association to receive the Dr. Frank McCue Sports Medicine Award for outstanding service to high school athletes. He was also inducted to membership in the Wythe County Sports Hall of Fame and is listed on the Sports Wall of Honor in Withers Park. Dr. Hughes served for many years on the vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church. He is a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aril 7, 1995, with interment to follow in East End Cemetery. The family will welcome friends at the residence on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Anniversary Fund or the Dr. Charles Brock Hughes Scholarship Fund at George Wythe High School, Wytheville. KEFFER, Bernard Rudolph, (``Rudy''), 74, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 4, 1995. He was a member of Vinton Wesleyan Church, a veteran of World War II and a retired salesman from Peoples Electronics. He was preceded in death by a son, David R. Keffer. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Clara Musselwhite Keffer. He was the devoted father of three surviving daughters and a son-in-law, Judy A. and James J. KUCZKO, Sue DeVilbiss, 70, of Norton, passed away Monday, April 3, 1995, after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of the late Grady and Mammie Rose DeVilbiss and was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Michael Kuczko. Mrs. Kuczko resided in the city of Norton for 50 years and served as General Registrar for the city for several years and was the first woman appointed to the City of Norton School Board and was a retired court reporter for the State and Federal Courts. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Norton, Va., and attended James Madison University. Surviving are her husband, Joseph Kuczko, Norton; two sons, John Thomas Kuczko, Abingdon, Paul Anthony Kuczko, Norton; two daughters, Suzanne Kuczko Fulton, Weber City, and Mary Kuczko Adams, Johnson City, Tenn.; two brothers, Daniel (Dee) DeVilbiss, Radford, Wesley DeVilbiss, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. MERKER, Edith Greer, 88, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995. A native of Troutdale, Va., she was the widow of Dr. Frank Merker, former director of the V.A. Medical Center. Dr. and Mrs. Merker had been married 58 years upon his death, July 23, 1994. Mrs. Merker was a retired registered nurse, nurse midwife, and private duty nurse. Survivors include, one daughter, Mathilda Sue Merker, of Millersville, Md.; two sisters, Mary Katherine Greer, of Roanoke, Sue Caprotti, of Tahuya, WA.; one brother, Carroll Greer, of San Mateo, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. YOUNG, Flora Alice Peters, 91, of Buena Vista, formerly of Roanoke, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995 at Shenandoah Valley Health Care Facility. Born in Floyd Co., Va. January 23, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Edward Peters and Elizabeth Radford Peters. She was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Warren and Betty Y. Manspile, Vesuvius; daughter, Doris Y. Heathcock, Richmond; sister, Iva Corn, Daville; eight granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 1995, Cannaday Cemetery, Floyd, with the Rev. Ray Tucker officiating. There will be no family night at the funeral home. Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington is in charge of the arrangements.
