FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE 11 FOREST FIRES

Firefighters spent Saturday battling several small blazes around the state as warm, dry weather continued to make woodlands ripe for fires.

About 11 forest fires covering some 110 acres burned, said Department of Forestry spokesman Lou Southard. He said blazes in Augusta and Mecklenburg counties required firefighters to drop water from the air.

None of the fires threatened anyone, Southard said.

Earlier in the week, fires burned 1,200 acres in Nelson County and 1,000 acres in Page County.

The combination of dry conditions and a large amount of brush on the ground from last year's ice storms has increased the state's risk of fires, Southard said.
