President John T. Casteen III plans to appoint a replacement in May or June for Jim Copeland, who was Virginia's athletic director for seven years before resigning in December to take the same job at Southern Methodist.
The Daily Progress said the five finalists are Arizona State athletic director Charles Harris, Davidson athletic director and former Virginia basketball coach Terry Holland, Idaho athletic director Pete Liske, Virginia interim athletic director Craig Littlepage and Tulane athletic director Kevin White.
The Charlottesville newspaper quoted an unnamed source as saying Harris and Liske are the two frontrunners in the search.
Harris was runner-up to Copeland for the Virginia post in 1987.
A native Virginian whose mother lives in Halifax County, Harris has been athletic director at Arizona State since 1984. He previously served as athletic director at Pennsylvania for four years.
Liske, a former pro football player, college baseball player and NFL game official, has been Idaho's athletic director since 1992. He spent seven years as an associate athletic director at Washington.
Holland, who was the Cavaliers' basketball coach from 1974-1990, was considered the early frontrunner when Copeland resigned Dec. 9. Holland has been Davidson's athletic director for the past five years.
Littlepage has been the interim athletic director since December. He played basketball at Pennsylvania and worked as an assistant to Holland from 1976-82 and 1988-1990. He was the head coach at Penn from 1982-1985 and head coach at Rutgers from 1985-88.
Littlepage said in December that he was not interested in pursuing the full-time job.
White has been athletic director at Tulane for four years. He has been praised as a fundraiser at Tulane and at Maine, where he was athletic director from 1987-1991.
White was instrumental in getting the development of the new $84 million sports arena in downtown New Orleans.
Copeland made approximately $125,000 during his last year as UVa's athletic director. He will make $145,000 at SMU.
