VIRGINIA WESTERN DETAILS OPEN HOUSE

A drawing for a $300 scholarship, workshops on college admissions and financial aid, and free blood-pressure checks will be part of an open house April 29 at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke.

People interested in the scholarship need to sign up in the college bookstore. The money must be used for two courses this fall.

The community college, which is 29 years old, is taking a more aggressive stance to encourage greater enrollment from the community. The open house is a first step toward creating greater recognition for the school, President Charles Downs said.

Virginia Western has 1,670 full-time students and 4,919 students classified as part-time, which means they are taking fewer than 12 credit-hours.

Along with the traditional courses that make up a two-year liberal arts degree, the college offers a range of programs, including administration of justice and legal assistant, civil engineering, microcomputer studies and welding.

During the open house, which begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m., each college department will have someone to explain the courses offered and to answer questions about admission to the programs.

Virginia Western also has an extensive selection of horticulture technology courses. as well as a community arboretum and a greenhouse. Tours of the arboretum will be offered at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The greenhouse, open throughout the tour hours, will feature a collection of orchids and tropical plants.

Continuous touring will be available of the new Humanities Building and its Community Art Collection, Brown Library and the Learning Center. Nursing students will check blood pressures in Anderson Hall, Room 136, throughout the day.

Thirty-minute information sessions on admissions will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Financial aid sessions will be held at 11:30 and 1:30 p.m. These will be in the cafeteria in the Business Science Building.
