SPCA NEEDS DONATIONS TO HELP MORE ANIMALS

Because of the efforts of the Roanoke Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 33 injured animals have been saved and adopted since January.

The SPCA held a fashion show and took pictures with Santa to raise money, some of which was allocated to its Injured Animal Fund. That allocation has run out, Executive Director Al Alexander said this week in an appeal for donations.

Some of the money raised from last week's pictures with the Easter Bunny will be allocated to the Injured Animal Fund, but that will be used quickly as more injured and starving animals arrive, Alexander's appeal said.

A stray hound dog, named Elvis by staff at the Valley Animal Hospital, barely survived being hit by a car. Animal control authorities found the dog and brought him to the SPCA about one month ago. Because of the Injured Animal Fund, Elvis was treated.

Another dog, a Spitz mix named Silver, also was found by animal control officers after being hit by a car. Vinton Veterinary Hospital cared for him for a month and released him back to the SPCA. Both dogs are waiting for adoption, the statement from Alexander said.

Although most of the animals that the SPCA sees are hit-and-run victims, some are malnourished and abused, Alexander said.

The SPCA could save as many as 150 of the animals that are brought to the shelter each year if it had more donations, Alexander said.
