In 1966, he became the first dean of liberal arts at Virginia Western. For 10 years before that, he was director of the University of Virginia's Roanoke Center and represented UVa in the founding of Clinch Valley College in Wise. He served as director of Clinch Valley for its first seven years.
Crockett was born in Wythe County in 1909. He returned there to teach after graduating from Roanoke College. He taught 36 students in eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse.
He was the first principal of Boonsboro High School in Bedford County and was principal of New London Academy for 10 years.
In 1992, he was honored by Roanoke College as one of the 150 most distinguished alumni in the college's first 150 years.
