Michael Brooslin, the Hall's curator, said Smith's No.42 will be displayed until next fall in the museum's ``1994-95 Season College Champions'' exhibit area. The jersey will be integrated into a permanent collegiate exhibit area on the third floor of the Hall of Fame.
Smith sank two free throws with seven tenths of a second remaining to give Tech a 65-64 victory over Marquette in the NIT championship game. Smith had 24 points and 12 rebounds in the title game.
Salem native Charlie Gunter has been named softball coach at Radford University. Gunter, 34, served as an assistant coach to Jeff Woods, who stepped down to devote his attention to his job as field hockey coach. Woods will also assume other administrative duties in Radford's athletic department.
Before coming to Radford, Gunter served as assistant softball and volleyball coach at Glenvar. A Radford graduate, Gunter was an athlete at Salem High School before going on to play football at Bridgewater College in the early 1980s. Gunter also serves as Radford's strength and conditioning coach in the offseason.
Gunter inherits a Highlander squad that posted a 20-33 record and had no senior players.
Liberty University assistant basketball coach Mark Miller has resigned and will become head coach at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, N.C. Before coming to Liberty, Miller was head coach at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Ga.
Virginia's wrestling team finished sixth nationally in the All-Academic rankings as compiled by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Cavaliers' 2.95 grade-point average was the highest of any ACC school. Virginia's Mike Krafchick, who reached the NCAA quarterfinals at 142 pounds this season, received honorable mention on the All-Academic team. Krafchick, a fourth-year sports medicine major, was selected first-team All-Academic last season and received an honorable mention in 1991-92.
New Market's Bob Moyers and Wolftown's Jim Kite fired a 3-under 69 Monday to capture their fifth consecutive VSGA Senior Four-Ball championship at the Golden Eagle in Irvington. The tournament was shortened to 18 holes after rain wiped out Monday's scheduled opening round. Fred Kelly and Remo Nicoli of Northern Virginia finished second at 70. Reggie Clark and Gibby Wingfield of Roanoke's Blue Hills Golf Club tied for seventh with a 73. Roanoker Ned Baber and his partner Sam Wallace also had a 73.
