Tech plant sale

BLACKSBURG - Perennials, annuals, bulbs and hanging baskets will be some of the plants on sale at the Virginia Tech Horticulture spring plant sale.

The sale will be at the Washington Street greenhouses on the following dates:

Thursday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Friday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Sunday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The plant sale is sponsored by the Virginia Tech Horticulture Club.

Trauma conference

RADFORD - Physicians, nurses and emergency medical personnel are invited to attend a conference on "Looking at the Multiple-Injured Trauma Patient from Three Views," at Saint Alban's Hospital Starlight room on Tuesday.

Dr. Peter Weimerskirsch, an emergency medicine physician at Radford Community Hospital, will speak on "Initial Assessment of the Trauma Patient from the Emergency Department Physician's View." Dr. Paul Kampfe, a general/vascular surgeon at the hospital, will speak on "Blunt Trauma Below the Umbilicus from the Trauma Surgeon's View," and Dr. Ken Gray, an orthopedic surgeon at the hospital, will speak on "Orthopedic Injuries Resulting from Trauma from the Orthopedic Surgeon's View."

Registration and vendor displays begin at 5:30 p.m., with the conference getting underway at 6 p.m.

Ballet performance

BLACKSBURG - A repeat of an original ballet by Danya Conn, "To Bear Witness," will be featured at the Southwest Virginia Ballet's performance Thursday at Blacksburg High School. Conn, a senior at Virginia Tech, choreographed and staged the dance as part of the "Fight Hatred" program last month commemorating the Holocaust. Conn also was the principal organizer of the program at Virginia Tech.

The Southwest Virginia Ballet's performance begins at 7:30 p.m. In addition to "To Bear Witness," the program also includes two short pieces, "Ballade" and "Moonlight Passing," as well as acts two and three of "Coppelia."

Conn will perform in the repeat performance of her ballet. Four other dancers from the New River Valley will appear with the company. Lana Beex, Marji Rose, Michelle Lookado and Desiree Reese will dance in "Coppelia."

Riding fun day

RADFORD - A horse and pony fun day will be held Saturday, May 13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at Oakwood Stables, Hazel Hollow Road. English, Western, driving, racking and other events are scheduled. Ribbons will be awarded in all classes.

Proceeds benefit the Montgomery County Humane Society's spay and neuter fund. The entry fee is $5 per class, or five classes for $20. Stall space is $5. A negative Coggins test is required.

Tourism celebration

PULASKI - The historic village of Newbern in Pulaski County is celebrating Virginia Heritage Tourism weeks until May 14. "Come see our stories," is the theme of the celebration.

Walking tours, food, entertainment, crafts and exhibits will be featured on Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum. The events are sponsored by the Newbern Promotional Bureau.

Residents of the village will also be on hand to share stories of Newbern's historic past.
