WOUND CAUSED DEATH

Charlie Virgil Carter bled to death in his small Northwest Roanoke basement apartment, becoming the city's ninth homicide this year, according to police.

A neighbor said she last saw Carter outside his apartment at 605 Eighth Street about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. At about 6 p.m. Thursday, the body of the 68-year-old man was found in the living room of his apartment. There were no signs of forced entry into the residence.

Friday, an autopsy revealed that a small puncture wound in Carter's neck caused his death.

Carter had recently been released from prison, convicted of killing his girlfriend of nearly 19 years during a 1983 domestic dispute. He was given a 22-year sentence.
