Cumberland County Sheriff Claude B. Meinhard said the wreck occurred around 3:45 p.m. He said those in critical condition were flown to hospitals in Richmond and Charlottesville.
Meinhard said the unnamed dragstrip off Virginia 610 in the northwest corner of the county was playing host to a ``Bodacious Monster Truck'' show and mud drag racing. He said there was not a lot of mud on the track at the time of the wreck.
Glen Hicks, of the Old Dominion Four-Wheel Drive Club which sponsored the event, said a late model car was racing against the clock down the 200-yard track when the driver lost control. The car went through a guard rail and fence before plowing into the crowd.
Hicks said the driver of the car, identified only as a 50-year-old Mississippi man, was not injured.
