Saipe (2-3) pitched seven innings and gave up one run on six hits while striking out five and walking five as Salem won its fifth straight. The Avalanche has won eight of its past nine games.
Holdren went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a homer and two RBI to become the first Salem player this season to have four hits in a game.
The Avalanche (16-14) used a five-run second inning off Lynchburg starter Jason Pfaff (2-3) to take a 5-0 lead. Forry Wells led off the inning with double which was followed by a single to center by Edgard Velasquez. Wells scored on the play when Lynchburg center fielder Charles Peterson unleashed a wild throw over the head of catcher Sergio Mendez, allowing Velasquez to go to second. After a Holdren single put runners on first and third, Salem catcher Mike Higgins hit a grounder that third baseman Raul Rodarte threw past first baseman Rob Leary, scoring both Velasquez and Holdren as the Avalanche took a 3-0 lead.
Chris Sexton then walked - his 17th in the past nine games - to put runners on first and second before Higgins was thrown out trying to steal third. Sexton scored on an RBI double by Vincente Garcia to give Salem a 4-0 lead. Garcia finished the Salem scoring in the second, coming home on a single by Colin Dixon, who drove in two runs on the night and extended his hitting streak to seven games.
Lynchburg (14-15) scored a run in the third to cut the lead to 5-1.
The Avalanche added a run in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead when Brian Culp singled with two out and scored on a double by Dixon. Velasquez scored on a RBI double by Nate Holdren in the fifth as Salem took a 7-1 lead. The Avalanche scored two runs in the sixth, and one in the eighth and ninth innings, including Holdren's solo blast in the ninth, his second of the year.
