VESTAL, Elizabeth Mason Cox, of Collinsville, died at her home on Saturday, May 5, 1995. She was born on February 20, 1916 in the Ridgeway area of Henry County, the second child of Jesse Edward and Talitha Banner Harris Cox. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Lucille Cox. She is survived by her husband, Warner Boldyn Vestal of Fork Mountain Rest Home, Franklin Co.; her daughter, Elizabeth Anne Vestal Miller, Rocky Mount; her granddaughter, Linda Anne Miller, Vienna; her grandson, Timothy Mark Miller; great-grandson, Wesley Warner Miller both of Waldorf, Md.; her brother, Harry F. Cox, Rocky Mount; her sisters, Mildred Cox Bowling, Rocky Mount and Lorraine Cox Draper, Dublin, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs . Vestal was a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Cameron Parish Chapter. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. William K. Dawson officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m and 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 342 S. Main St., Rocky Mount.

AKERS, Gabriel David, infant son of Eric Wayne and Melissa Campbell Akers, of Christiansburg, died Friday, May 6, 1995. Also surviving are one brother, Nathaniel Akers, of the home; grandparents, David and Carol Campbell, Leon and Vergie Akers, all of Christiansburg. A family graveside service will be held. ALBERT, Homer Elwood, 71, of McCoy, died Friday, May 5, 1995, at his home. Mr. Albert was born in Montgomery County on January 2, 1924, a son of the late Samuel Ellis and Sina Jane Akers Albert. He was retired from R.A.A.P. with more than 30 years of service. Mr. Albert was an active member and Elder of Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Christine Snider Albert, nine sisters and five brothers. Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Judy A. and John Scott, Blacksburg, and Jill A. Albert, McCoy; one son and daughter-in-law, William A. and Claudia Albert, Lynchburg; one granddaughter, Karen A. Scott, Charlotte, N.C.; two stepgrandchildren, William and Cindy Henning; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Alexandria Henning, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one sister, Ruby A. Smith, McCoy, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 1995, at Centennial Christian Church with the Rev. Gordon Lee officiating. BRYANT, Clayton L., 79, of Roanoke, formerly of Fredericksburg, died Friday, May 5, 1995. He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 33 years service. He was a charter member of St. Matthias United Methodist Church in Fredericksburg and presently a member of Southview United Methodist Church in Roanoke, Va. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Browning Bryant; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn Bryant and Rev. George Pearson, Barbara and Kim Burgess, all of Roanoke; Ellen and Jerry Berman of Richmond; four grandchildren, Justin and Lindsay Burgess, Matthew and Michael Berman. The family will receive friends at Oakey's North Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, May 8. A private graveside service will be followed by a memorial service at St. Matthias United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 with the Rev. Steve Bird officiating. COLLINS, Norma, (""Bobbie""), 68, of Radford, died Friday, May 5, 1995. Mrs. Collins worked in real estate management, was a member of Salem Church of Christ, W. Main St., Salem, and was an active volunteer with the Republican Party, having been a former Delegate and District Chairman. Survivors include her husband, Darrell R. Collins; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda C. and Donald B. Irons, Blacksburg; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert R. (""Dan"") and Robin S. Collins, Crossville, Tenn., and Jeffery L. and Ann T. Collins, Parrott, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Don G. and Jeanne Mullins, Salem; grandchildren, Todd Kelly, Amy Kelly, Mark Collins and Elizabeth Collins. She was pre-deceased by a granddaughter, Jessica Collins. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 8, 1995, by the Rev. Scott Taylor, in John M. DAVID, Drewry Lee, 71, of Route 1, Sandy Level, died Saturday, May 6, 1995, at his residence. Born January 16, 1924 in Franklin County, he was a son of the late Ollie Lee David and Annie David David. He was a retired farmer and a member and former Deacon of Liberty Christian Church, where he served as Sunday School, secretary for 25 years. Mr. David was a veteran of World War II and a member of the V.F.W., Obie D. Minter Memorial Post #10840, Penhook. He is survived by his wife, Erma Davidson David of the residence; two sons, Joe D. David and Ronny David, both of Penhook; three daughters, Bernice D. Jefferson of Penhook, Kitty D. Cales of Ona, W.Va., and Susan D. Doss of Gretna; two sisters, Geneva Campbell of Penhook and Odessa Shelton of Hurt; ten grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, May 8, 1995, at the Liberty Christian Church by Wayne Grinnell, Minister and the Rev. J.D. Hunt III. Interment will follow in the Liberty Memorial Cemetery. FERGUSON, Jackie Burris, 58, of Roanoke, whom was deeply loved and much respected, died early Saturday morning, May 6, 1995. He was taken to Community Hospital by the Williamson Road Rescue Squad. The family is very grateful for everyone that helped in every way. Mr. Ferguson was born May 31, 1936, the son of the late Jessie F. Ferguson and Jennie Blankenship Ferguson and was a native of Roanoke. Jackie is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Mamie Rose Delp Ferguson of their Roanoke home and their three loving and devoted children, Larry Dean Ferguson and wife Rebecca and son Jeremy, Jackie Paul Ferguson and wife Vicki and their four children, Jackie Junior, Richard, Mark, and Crystal. His daughter is Lois Ann Ferguson. All the children and grandchildren reside in the Roanoke area. Also surviving are his brother and sister-in-law, James L. and Chunja Ferguson, Newport News; a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Kenneth Stevens, Vinton; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Leeina Ferguson; brother Joey Ferguson, all of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his father-in-law, Lloyd A. Delp, Fincastle, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was retired from Norfolk Southern Railway and had served many years with the U.S. Marine Reserves. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside, Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Elder Leonard Brammer and Elder W. T. Conner officiating. HUFFMAN, Randall Grady, 32, of Roanoke, passed away after an extended illness on Thursday, May 4, 1995, at his home where he was loved and cared for by his family. Randy was an accomplished concert pianist, having studied at the Shenandoah Conservatory and Roanoke College. Surviving are his mother, Barbara Pierce and grandmother, Nola D. Huffman, both of Roanoke; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard Grady and Carol Pierce, a niece and nephew, all of Iowa; and an aunt, Phyllis C. Huffman, Fla. JONES, Mary Louise, (``Beauty''), 69, of Salem, passed away Thursday, May 4, 1995. She was retired as a Teacher Aide with the Roanoke County Public Schools. Survivors include her mother, Jessie P. Jones, Salem; cousins, Timothy Stewart, Los Angeles, Calif., Melody (Ricardo) Stovall, Salem, Harold Jones, George Jones, Gwendolyn Jones, all of Roanoke, the Bratton Family of Catawba. MASON, Mary Waldron, 85, of Narrows, died Friday, May 5, 1995, in a Pearisburg hospital. She was born in Giles County on January 30, 1910 and was the daughter of the late Rupert Edward and Armenta Hare Waldron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Mason. She was a retired operator in twisting with the Hoechst-Celanese Corporation in Narrows. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Narrows. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Wilburn of Narrows; a brother, Dennis Waldron; a sister Kathleen Biggs, both of Rich Creek; two grandsons, Michael J. Wilburn of Pearisburg, and Todd Edward Wilburn of Narrows. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside at 1 p.m. Monday, May 8, 1995, at Fairview Cemetery, Narrows, with the Rev. McDOWELL, Katharine Boyd, 78, Roanoke, formerly of Chamberburg, Pa., died Friday, May 5, 1995, in a local hospital. She was the widow of John C. McDowell. MILLER, Kathleen Sorrells, 64, of Goodview died Friday, May 5, 1995 in a Roanoke hospital. She is survived by her husband, Samuel G. Miller; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Glenn and Becky Miller, Gary Lynn and Charlene Miller, all of Goodview; one daughter and fiance, Kathleen Edna Miller and Tony Lee Riddleberger, Goodview; one brother, E. McGrady Sorrells, Waynesboro; four grandchildren, Larry Glenn Miller Jr., Shannon Miller Johnson, Gary Lynn Miller Jr. and wife Becky, Trey Scott Miller; four great-grandchildren, Teryn Elaine Johnson, Jessica Lynn Miller, Kristian Lee Miller, Samantha Elizabeth Johnson; and a number of nieces and nephews. MOORE, Vernon Peary, 75, of Mariner Health Care, Wilmington, N.C., formerly of Gillette Dr., died Monday, April 24, 1995. Mr. Moore was born December 7, 1919, in Freeburn, Ky., to the late Marion Homer and Essie Keith Moore. He was a member of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in WWII. He worked for N & W Railroad in Roanoke, Va., in the Traffic Department for a time after the war. Mr. Moore attended the American University in Washington, D.C. and the Harvard Business School in Boston, Mass. Mr. Moore was retired from the General Electric Co., Wilmington, N.C. Surviving are his son, Jeffery Allan Moore, Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Elizabeth Moore Chalk, Youngsville, N.C.; one brother, Howard Clarence Moore, Torrance, Calif.; two sisters, June Kirk, Richmond, Aldene Nowlin, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Jonathan Allan and Jacob Allan Moore, both of Phoenix, Ariz. Memorial services were held April 27 at Unitarian Universalist Church with Rev. Lone Jensen officiating. MOSELEY, Ella Mae Hayslett, 64, of Roanoke, died Friday, May 5, 1995. She was a member of the Wildhurst Presbyterian Church and is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, David L. and Virginia Hayslett of Buchanan, John H. and Janet Hayslett of Jonesville; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Sam Kemp of Jonesville; brother, John R. NICHOLAS, Alma Louise Day, 80, of Lexington, died Friday, May 5, 1995, at her residence. A daughter of the late Leonard and Florene Waldron Day, she was born June 15, 1914 in Botetourt County where she attended the public school. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served as President of the Baptist Training Union, Chairperson of the Deaconess Board, Coordinator for Vacation Bible School Sunday School Teacher, Chairperson of the Womans Club. Her other affiliations include President of the American Legion Auxiliary, President of the Lylburn Downing Band Auxiliary, Sixth District President of the Colored Parents Teachers Association, Member of the Lylburn Downing P.T.A., a Girl Scout Troop Leader and United Way Campaign Organizer. She was predeceased by a son Ret. Col. Howard Nicholas and a sister, Mrs. Lorene D. Sales. Surviving are her husband, Shedrick Nicholas, Lexington; two sons, Johnnie Nicholas, Richmond and Bernard Nicholas, Silver Spring, Md.; two daughters, Donna Cassell, Atlanta, Ga. and Alma Gay Nichols, Roanoke; three daughters-in-law, Jacqueline, Jean and Peggy Nicholas; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leroy Day, San Francisco, Calif., James Day, Akron, Ohio and Earl Day, Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Arzelia Stone, Oakland, Calif., and Dematrice Thompson, Comstock Park, Mich.; a brothers-in-law, Horace Nicholas, Long Island, N.Y.; three sisters-in-law, Ada Alexander, Long Island, N.Y., Hannah Barnett, St. Albans, N.Y., and Dora Simpson, Brentwood, Md.; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. NICHOLS, James Robert Jr., 87, of Route 2, Bedford died Saturday, May 6, 1995 at Veterans Hospital in Salem. He was the husband of Gladys Knott Nichols of Bedford, and the eldest son of the late James Robert Nichols and Mary Cooney Nichols. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie N. Harris and Allee N. McKeever. He was a 1930 graduate of VPI and a retiree of Stone Printing and Walker Foundry, and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Bedford. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara; two brothers and their wives, Ralph S. and Wanda H. Nichols, S. Kent and Rosale K. Nichols all of Bedford; two granchildren, David Napier of Providence, Mary N. Lovejoy of Chesterfield; a great-grandso n, Zachary Napier; four nephews; two nieces; five great-nephews; and three great-nieces. A retired Major, Army Infantry, he served in the African Campaign of World War II, and was commanding officer of the newly formed 116th Infantry of the National Guard in Bedford. OAKEY, Minor Wilburn, 88, of Roanoke, died at his home early Saturday morning, May 6, 1995. He was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church and was retired as Vice President of John M. Oakey, Inc., where he currently served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. He helped organize and was the First Cap tain of the Salem Life Saving and First Aid Crew in 1932 and had served as President of the Roanoke Exchange Club. He was Past Master of Virginia Heights Masonic Lodge, served on the Better Business Bureau Board of Directors, served as Chaplain of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association, was Past President of the Blue Ridge Funeral Directors Association, served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association for three years. He was a trustee of Virginia Heights Masonic Lodge, a member of the Scottish Rite, Kazim Temple and the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club. Surviving are his wife, Olleen Surface Oakey; daughter and son-in-law, Caroline O. and Edward G. Talley; son and daughter-in-law, Dale Campbell and Carolyn S. Oakey, all of Roanoke; two sisters, Evelyn Oakey Warner, Bluefield, Miriam Oakey Wagner, Maryland; four grandchildren, Edward G. (Sonny) Talley, Jr., Dr. M. Christopher Talley, Lisa Paige Talley, Jason Campbell Oakey; two great-grandchildren, Laura M. Talley, Alicia M. Talley. SIMMONS, Virgil A., 75, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Wednesday, May 3, 1995. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise B. Simmons. He was a retired Roanoke City Police Officer, retiring in January of 1966. He was also a retired employee of the Roanoke County Sheriff Department, retiring in January of 1985. He was a member of the Roanoke Musicians Union and an Army veteran of WW II, serving in the Third Armored Division. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Winston V. and Bette Ann Simmons, Roanoke, David M. and Michelle Simmons, Duluth, Ga., and Ron W. and Terry Simmons, Richmond; one grandson, Brian W. Simmons, Roanoke; two brothers, Ernest V. Simmons and Howard L. Simmons, both of Herrin, Ill.; two sisters, Juanita B. Simmons, South Holland, Ill. and Kathryn L. Walker, of Matteson, Ill. SURFACE, Jimmie Phil, 48, of 203 Mountain View Drive, Bluefield, Va. died Thursday, May 5, 1995 in a Russell County Hospital following a car accident. Born in Bluefield, he was the son of James Lee Surface and June Humphries Surface both of Bluefield, W.Va. He w as a graduate of Bluefield High School in 1964, attended the University of Tennessee, and a graduate of Bluefield State College. He attended the First Church of God in Bluefield, Va. and was a member of the Bluefield Elks Club #269, Bluefield Moose Lodge #279, and a very active member of the Graham High School Athletic Booster Club. He was an Engineering Specialist for Appalachian Power Co. for 28 years. He annually competed in all the area Walk-A-Thons, Bluefield State College, Hawkins-Mathena, and Multiple Sclerosis etc. Survivors, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Ann Surface of the home; two sons, Charles Lee ""Chad"" Surface of Bluefield, Va., Jimmie Brent Surface of Bluefield, Va.; daughter, Mrs. Martin (Sherri Lynn) Bratcher of Roanoke; sister, Mrs. Marsha Plummer of Richmond; one granddaughter, Bre Anne Lee Bratcher of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel in Bluefield with Rev. Roy L. Tincher officiating. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Green Valley. WEEKS, Virginia Haymaker, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, May 6, 1995. She was the widow of William Graham Weeks. Surviving are a son, Don G. Weeks; a daughter and son-in-law, Carole W. and Jay Jackson; a grandson, Jeff J. Jackson, all of Roanoke. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, May 8, 1995 in Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. Robert M. Chapman officiating. WHITESELL, Mary Frances, 72, of Greensburg, Pa., died Wednesday, May 3, 1995. She was preceded in death by her father, Stryle I. Taylor Sr.; mother, Anna Rains Taylor; and brother, Stryle Taylor Jr. She is survived by her husband, Henry R. Whitesell Sr.; son and daughter-in-law, H. Ray and Dana Whitesell of Greensburg, Pa.; grandson, Justin Daniel Whitesell; sister, Lynette Reed of Christiansburg; brothers, Bill Taylor and James P. Taylor, both of Salem; also a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 8, 1995, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem, with Dr. William A.
