POOL SHARKS CIRCLING CITY FOR ONE-POCKET II

SIXTY-FOUR PROS and amateurs will compete for $15,000 in tournament prize money in Roanoke.

Many of the nation's top pool shooters will begin to arrive in Roanoke today for Roanoke One-Pocket II, which runs Wednesday through Sunday at Guys & Dolls Billiards Parlor on Williamson Road.

The tournament, a huge success in last year's inaugural venture, will offer about $15,000 in prize money for the 64-member field of professionals and amateurs. The champion, who will be crowned after Sunday night's finals, will receive approximately $5,000.

As of Monday, the entry list included such prominent players as Steve Mizerak, Buddy Hall, Nick Varner, Allen Hopkins, Grady Mathews and Rafael Martinez.

Last year's champion, Dave Bollman of Virginia Beach, and runner-up Billy Incardona of Chicago also are expected back. Bollman, a 52-year-old house pro, surprised the field last year and knocked off Incardona 5-4 in the final.

Wednesday's play will be informal as the players heat up for Thursday's start of the one-pocket event. The tournament includes day and night sessions Thursday through Sunday. Spectator passes are $10 per day (day and night sessions). A tournament pass is $35.
