Marvin C. Gunn was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for a laceration to his right arm and later was released, authorities said.
The freight train was eastbound near Glade Creek Road, south of Sidetrack Road, about 5:20 a.m. when it grazed Gunn. It was traveling 45 mph in a 50 mph zone.
