ASHWORTH, Thomas F., 53, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, May 11, 1995. Mr. Ashworth was an Air Force veteran. He had been an employee of the Kroger Company since 1961 and at the time of his death he was serving as Head Grocery Clerk at the Tanglewood Store. Surviving are his wife, Emma J. Ashworth; daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Johnny Shirley, Southmont, N.C.; granddaughter, Kelly Rawls and husband Rob, Fayetteville, N.C.; grandson, John Shirley and wife Michelle, Lexington, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Alex Shirley, Josh and Andrew Rawls; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Jack Horner, Columbia, N.C., June Galanos, Virginia and A. T. Kelly, all of Greensboro, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Su sanne Ashworth, Orange, Mass.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tony and Chiyo Puglisi, Biloxi, Miss., Jimmy and Linda Puglisi, Fayetteville, N.C.; mother-in-law, Ruby J. Puglisi, Fayetteville, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's North Chapel by the Rev. Frank W. Feather. Entombment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. BEVERLEY, Jesse Lee, 80, of Buena Vista died Sunday, May 14, 1995 at his home. He was born February 5, 1915 in Amherst County, son of the late Price Beverley and Mary Wood Beverley. He attended Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Martin Beverley, and a son, Donnie Beverley. Surviving are five sons, Ralph Beverley of S.C., Delmas Beverley, Danny Beverley, Hank Beverley and John Beverley, all of Buena Vista; three daughters, Dana Wilkins and Coline Welch both of Buena Vista and Nadine Armstrong of Lexington; one brother Hedges Beverley of Natural Bridge; one sister Vera Alcorn of Natural Bridge; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Bain officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Service in Buena Vista.

COMER, Elsie Brown, 95, of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 14, 1995. She was long a resident of Bluefield, W.Va., but had lived in Roanoke since 1991. She was a member of the Bland St. United Methodist Church in Bluefield. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, James P. and Barbara R. Comer of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Helen C. Sutton of Raleigh, N.C., and Dr. Mary B. Comer of Chapel Hill, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Clay, David and Whitney Sutton of Raleigh, N.C.; several nieces and nephews including James L. Gardner Jr. of Huntington, W.Va. Graveside services and burial will be in Bluefield, W.Va. HOLLIDAY, John Wright, 59, of Salem, died Saturday, May 13, 1995, at Lewis Gale Hospital. He was born in Sebring, Fla. and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He went on to work, and then retired from the Salem Police Department, and was Salem Police Department's first Youth Officer at Salem High Sch ool. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #3, and also enjoyed coaching various little league team sports in the area. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Hunter and Novella Wright Holliday. Survivors include his wife, Marie Waid Holliday; a son, Todd W. Holliday, Los Angeles, Calif.; daughters, Lisa M. and her husband, William G. Grigg II., Charlotte, N.C., Sharon L. Holliday, Seal Beach, Calif., Lori A. Holliday, Salem, Lynn E. Holliday, Charlotte, N.C.; grandson, William G. Grigg III; brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Kathryn Holliday, Robert and Cheri Holliday, Thomas Allen Holliday, all of Salem; sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice and Pete Sullenberger, Monterey, Va., Elaine and Thomas M. KOTARY, Elwin Thomas, (""Tiger Tom""), 70, of Roanoke, die d Saturday, May 13, 1995. He was a retired business man and race car driver, and was affiliated with the Disabled American Veterans, as well as the Amvets Post #40. Surviving are his wife, Betty Kotary; daughters, Judi Popp, Castro Valley, Calif., Beverly Alessi, Alberqerque, New Mexico, Christy Clayton, Tempe, Ariz., and Dawn Malott, Mesa, Ariz.; sons, James (""Sonny"") Clayton, Copper Hill, and Mike Clayton, Roanoke; eight grandchildren; including a very special granddaughter, Monique Clayton; five brothers, Eugene Kotary, Charles Kotary, Albert Kotary, Clifford Kotary, and Herk Kotary, all of New York; one sister, Margaret Come, New York. McCRAW, Annie M., U.S. Army Major retired, 87, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, May 13, 1995, in the Pulaski Health Care Center. She was a former nurse at the Radford University Infirmary, a former public health nurse in Roanoke County, and was instrumental in the formation of the McVitty House. She was the recipient of the Commendation Ribbon with medal pendant distinguishing herself by meritorious service as General Duty Nurse and Head Nurse Ward 14A, Clinical Division, U.S. Army Surgical Research Unit, Brook Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas from October 7, 1955 until April 30, 1959. During this period of duty, in addition to carrying out the normal duties of her assignment in an outstanding manner, Major McCraw, on her own initiative, sought out individual, emotional and social problems of the severely burned patients and proceded to alleviate or solve them in various ways with expenditure of her free time and private funds, thereby minimizing any additional stress which might adversely influence patient survival. By her untiring and completely selfless devotion to duty, Major McCraw has been a stimulus and inspiration to other members of the U.S. Army Surgical Research Unit. Her outstanding service reflected the highest credit upon herself, this Unit, Brook Army Medical Center, and the nursing service of the U.S. Army. Surviving are two sisters, Lovonia Armentrout, Decatur, Ala., and Mary Keister Bain, Radford; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton with the Rev. Gina Rhea officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home.

NUNLEY, Judith Kay, 53, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, May 14, 1995, at her residence. She was wife of Robert L. Nunley. Born October 6, 1941 in Lubbock, Texas, she was the daughter of Marjorie Rhodes Milliken of Lubbock, Texas, and the late Byron G. Milliken. She was an artist and art teacher and was associated with the Shades of the Blue Ridge chapter of the National Society of Tole and Decorative Painters. In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by four children, Don Nunley, his wife, Helen and their two children, Eileen and Amy of Roanoke, Ron Nunley, of Cairo, Egypt, David Nunley, his wife, Denise, and their son, Tommy of Carson City, Nevada, and Susan Schamerhorn, her husband, Bobby, and their son, Michael of Goode, Va. She is also survived by on brother, Joe D . Milliken of Lubbock, Texas; two sisters, Jane Henson of Hobbs, New Mexico and Jerry Yeatts of Dallas, Texas; and her special friend, Alice Taylor, of Atlanta, Ga. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel by Minister Charles E. Ghee with interment following in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

PROFFIT, Zula Agee, 85, of Floyd, passed away Sunday, May 14, 1995, in Skyline Manor Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas T. Proffit; her parents, Albert C. and Eulala Lee Agee, one brother Johnnie Agee, and three nephews Harold Agee, David Gardner and Randolph Gardner. She is survived by one sister, Goldie A. Gardner, Floyd; three nephews, James C. Gardner, Galax, Calvin L. Gardner, Floyd, Bobby L. Gardner, Floyd. SMITH, Ruby Richardson, 89, of Elliston, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 13, 1995, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Dawn Smith. She is survived by her husband, William Earl Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Judy Smith, Elliston; two brothers, Kermit B. Richardson, W. Buford Richardson; two sisters, Thelma Hunley, and Helen Underwood, all of Elliston; two granddaughters and husbands, Gina and Jack Reed Jr., Bethany and Dennis Epperly; grandson, John Eric Smith; two great-grandsons, Jack (""Jay"") Reed III, and Christopher Smith. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 16, 1995 at 11 a.m. at the Halls United Church, with the Rev. David Lagerveld officiating. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery. STAMMERS, Mary Jane, 54, of Hillsville, passed away Friday, May 12, 1995, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She is survived by her parents, Homer and Mary Austin of Hillsville. Funeral services 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, 1995, at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville. Interment will follow in the Wilkinson Cemetery. ZYLA, Carolyn Gentilini, 79, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, May 13, 1995. Mrs. Zyla was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Gold Star Wives of America. She was predeceased by her husband during World War II, Michael N. Zyla and two brothers, Emilo F. and John Gentilini. She retired from the Roanoke City School System. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria Z. and Melvin Divers, Roanoke; grandchildren, Toni McLawhorn, Roanoke, Patty Robertson, Hardy, Kathy Alachnowicz and Michael Divers, both of Roanoke; six great-grandchildren; brothers, E. V. ``Tony"" Gentilini, Newport News, Charles D. Gentilini, Portsmouth; sisters, Ann Bisogne, Metuchen, N.J.; a number of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Hospice Program at Roanoke Memorial Hospital or the building fund at St. Andrews Catholic Church.
