Team winners at CMS who competed in the final school round against Holzer were MICHAEL BROCKMAN, BRANDON DAIGLE, WAYNE GILLENWATER, STEVEN MINNICK, BRENNON OVERSTREET, JESSICA POPE, MELISSA JO RICH, SCOTT TAYLOR and B.J. WHITEHURST.
DAVID STRATHY, a sixth-grader at Auburn Middle School, also competed at the state geography contest.
The contest was sponsored by the National Geographic World and Chrysler Corp. It was started seven years ago in response to the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States.
Two Christiansburg High School students have been accepted to the Brevard Music Center for the 1995 summer session.
LAURA DANGERFIELD, a freshman, plays the flute. She is the daughter of Jim and Sue Taylor. STEVEN HESS, a sophomore, plays the violin. He is the son of Ann and John Hess.
Both students received partial scholarships to Brevard. They will attend the six week camp from June 21 to August 6.
Several students at Bethel Elementary School were recognized at a school assembly for participating in St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Math-A-Thon. The students mastered math while completing a booklet of about 200 problems. Students had sponsors pledge money for each problem they worked. Twenty-nine students participated, raising a total of $1,262.88.
SAMANTHA AKERS, a third-grader, topped the fund-raiser by raising $300 in pledges. The money raised will be used to support St. Jude's life-saving research, patient care and educational programs for children.
JAMIE BISHOP, a fourth-grader at Riner Elementary School, will see her name in print when a poem she wrote appears in the "Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans." The book is currently being printed and is expected to be available in late August.
Several area students were runners-up in the 1995 Virginia State Arbor Day Poster Competition. This year's theme was "Trees are terrific..."
The students are YAN MARIE TES, Elliston-Lafayette Elementary School; ELISHIA BRENNAN of Willis Elementary School; ASA LEE HENDRICKSON of Macy McClaugherty School and AMITY DEWEY of Check Elementary School.
SCHOOL EVENTS
Summer school is just one month away. Students in Montgomery County can register for summer class at their home schools from May 15 to May 31. Students not enrolled in MCPS will be permitted to enroll at any secondary school. Final registration will be held at home schools on Wednesday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Following is a listing of available middle and high school programs:
Classes for the High School Early Graduation Program start June 15 and end August 2. Class time is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Classes be held at Blacksburg High School.
High school academic classes start June 20 and end August 2. Class time is from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Classes will be at Blacksburg High School.
Middle School Institute classes start June 20 and end August 2. Class time is from 8:20 a.m. to noon. These classes will be held at Blacksburg Middle School.
The State Heath Department will be in all primary schools in Montgomery County administering free immunization shots to pre-schoolers and any child that may need immunization. Parents need to bring with them previous immunization records.

The Blacksburg High School Choral Department will present a spring concert and annual silent auction on Thursday, May 18.
The concert choir, jazz choir and madrigal singers will perform. Local businesses have donated items and gift certificates to be auctioned off for this year's fund-raiser.
The concert is free and will start at 7:30 p.m. in the school's auditorium. For more information call 951-5706.
The Radford High School choirs and symphonic bands will present a pre-tour concert on Thursday, May 18. The concert is part of the school's cultural exchange program with Hall High School in West Hartford, Conn.
The program will feature music that the bands will perform on their tour of Connecticut and New York City later this month.
The concert starts at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium. Admission is $2.
A presentation about childhood and adolescent depression will be co-sponsored by the Giles County Parent Resource Center and the Mental Health Association of New River Valley on Thursday, May 18.
Etty Vandsburger, a licensed clinical social worker, will speak and provide a unique perspective and indispensable teaching tool on childhood/adolescent depression. The video "Claire's Story" will also be shown.
The program will start at 7 p.m. in the library of Macy McClaugherty Elementary School. For more information call the Giles County Parent Resource Center at 921-1912 or 626-7287.
What should students eat? The Montgomery County Public Schools is inviting parents, students and residents to help select the foods served in school cafeterias.
In its second year, the "We Serve Smiles" food show is part of the county's school nutrition program. The event will be held on Saturday, May 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Blacksburg High School. Booths offering a selection of foods will be set up for taste testing. Selected booths will also have information available on recycling, education, food service and sanitation.
The 1995 Price's Fork Elementary School Science Fair will be held Thursday, May 18 and Friday, May 19, in the school's multi-purpose room. More than 80 entries will be displayed in four categories: physical science, botany, zoology and creators.
Judging will take place Thursday afternoon with students giving five minute presentations of their project to a judge.
Projects will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday.
The PTA at Kipps Elementary will have an end-of-the-year forum on Thursday at 7 p.m. The program will include a panel of teachers and parents from the Shared Decision Making Team. They will address written comments and concerns submitted to a moderator by parents at the meeting.
Elections for PTA officers for the 1995-96 school year will also be conducted.
On Monday, May 22, the PTA invites fifth-grade students at Kipps and their parents to attend a "Moving to Middle School" program. The program will offer students the opportunity to aks questions and discuss concerns wtih middle school personnel as well as sixth grade students. A separate session is scheduled simultaneously for parents.

The Christiansburg Elementary School PTA sponsors a "Kaleidoscope of Events" on Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will include a car wash, bake sale and suprise activities for children of all ages. The event will be in the rear parking lot of the school.
