POINTS OF BEAUTY, INTEREST ALONG RIVER

A quick list of natural and cultural resources along the New River in Giles County:

McCoy Falls, a popular fishing, picnicking and kayaking spot, as well as a favorite tubing and sunbathing hangout for Virginia Tech students. Tubers putting in at New River Junction would spend the majority of their trip under one of the power line corridors.

Fools Face, a favorite outcropping for rappellers.

McCoy Mines historic site, where 12 coal miners were killed in the 1920s.

The Adam Harman cabin, a potential National Historic Registry site, and the spot where Mary Draper Ingles was rescued after her escape from Indian captors. Harman, a fur trapper, rescued Ingles and took her to his cabin.

An 80-foot hole in the river bottom that draws divers from near and far.

The Palisades, limestone cliffs more than 80 feet tall that stretch for five miles along both banks from Eggleston to Pembroke.

At least two open spaces that are designated for future parks in Giles County's greenway plan.

Two productive trout streams.

A proposed relocation route for the Appalachian Trail.

One corridor is highly visible from Angels Rest, a major outcropping on Wolf Mountain overlooking the trail and the New River.
