A Bedford woman was in very serious condition in a hospital Monday evening after being hit by a car while crossing U.S. 460 in Bedford on Sunday night.

Nancy Wilcher, 23, was crossing the highway with her mother near the Terrace House Inn when she was hit by a car, Bedford Police Chief Milton Graham said.

Wilcher was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she remained Monday, according to Graham. She had a severe laceration to her abdomen.

Her mother, whose name was not available, was not hit.

The car was driven by Wayne Allen Wright, 55, of Bedford, according to Graham.
