Bill Foster, Tech's head coach, confirmed that UNC-G athletic director Nelson Bobb had requested and received permission to interview Hussey, previously the head coach at Davidson College.
Hussey, 53, was at a coaching clinic Tuesday in Tennessee and could not be reached for comment.
``He's [Hussey] all you would ever want in a right-hand man,'' Foster said. ``He never tires of watching film, drawing plays or talking strategy. After four years, it's like he can read my mind.
``I feel really fortunate to have had him here.''
UNC-G has been in the market for a head coach since Mike Dement resigned two weeks ago to become the head coach at Southern Methodist. UNC-G has narrowed its search to Hussey, Wake Forest assistant Ricky Stokes and Dement's top aide, Randy Peele.
Peele is said to have the players' support, which is not surprising.
``Somebody is going to step into a pretty good team,'' Foster said. ``They went 23-10 last year and have their top 10 players returning.''
Foster said he was told by Bobb that Hussey has been on the Spartans' ``short list'' since the 1993-94 season, when he observed Hussey during Tech's 86-59 victory over UNC-G in Blacksburg.
``I think Bobby wants to be a head coach again,'' Foster said, ``but he's limited himself geographically to about a two- or three-state area. He has two sons in North Carolina and a farm in Asheboro [N.C.], so that would be perfect for him.''
UNC-G is expected to fill the opening by the end of the week.
