VARNEY WINS 2 MORE TITLES IN PIONEER

Glenvar's Nick Varney completed an unbeaten Pioneer District tennis career in singles and doubles play by winning both championships Tuesday.

In singles play, Varney defeated Bath County's Ray Wagner 6-0, 6-1 in a semifinal to earn a meeting with teammate Josh Williamson, who beat Bath County's Alex Reuter 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Varney won the final 6-0, 6-3.

Varney and Williamson won the doubles title, breezing past teammates Andy Lesperance and Glen Hambrick 7-5, 6-1. The champions beat Bath County's Kevin Campbell and John Judah 6-0, 6-0 in their semifinal, and Lesperance and Hambrick defeated Bath County's Alex Reuter and Ray Wagner 6-0, 7-5.

Glenvar's singles and doubles titlists advance to the Region C tournament Monday at Radford University's Dedmon Center courts. Team competition begins at 9 a.m., with singles and doubles play to start at 1 p.m.

In other tennis Tuesday:

ROANOKE VALLEY DISTRICT: Andrew Thomas and Hunter Carson of Patrick Henry defeated Cave Spring's Randy Price and Jason Bialek 6-4, 6-4 to win the doubles championship. Thomas and Carson advanced to the Northwest Region championships May 20 at Woodbridge High School.

In team semifinals, Patrick Henry defeated Franklin County 7-2 and Cave Spring beat Pulaski County 9-0. Patrick Henry and Cave Spring will meet in the final today at 9 a.m. at River's Edge.

BLUE RIDGE DISTRICT: Jeff Henley of Salem and Jamie Gilliland of Lord Botetourt advanced to the boys' singles championship match. Henley defeated Brian Agee of Northside 6-0, 6-0 in a semifinal, and Gilliland beat Maquel Castro of William Byrd 6-4, 6-2.

Henley and Gilliland also advanced to the doubles title match. Henley teamed with Will Wimmer to defeat Trevor Cox and George Pickaral of Rockbridge County 6-0, 6-3 in a semifinal. Gilliland and Gerard Wessel beat Castro and William Kriskern 6-4, 6-2.

The Blue Ridge team final is 1 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Civic Center. The singles final will be played at 4 p.m., followed by the doubles championship match at 6.

Soccer

Cave Spring and Franklin County each won semifinals to advance to the Roanoke Valley District boys' championship match.

Brian Sharp scored four goals as Cave Spring defeated Pulaski County 6-1. Timmy Williams had the lone goal for Cougars.

John Muse scored two goals as Franklin County beat Patrick Henry 4-3 in overtime. The score was tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation. Hanes Feldmann scored on a penalty kick in the first overtime to give the Patriots a 3-2 lead. In the second overtime, Jonathan Seale and Muse scored to give the Eagles the victory.

Cory Evans had two goals to lead Patrick Henry.

Cave Spring and Franklin County will meet in the title match at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cave Spring High School. Cave Spring will face Patrick Henry in the girls' title game at 5 p.m.
