AVALANCHE DROPS THIRD STRAIGHT

The Wilmington Blue Rocks, playing in front of their largest home crowd of the year, used four hits from Anthony Medrano and stout pitching from Ken Ray to shut down the Salem Avalanche 4-1 in Carolina League action on Friday.

Ray (2-1) went six innings, gave up seven hits, and allowed just one run in picking up his second win of the year in front of 6,066 fans. He walked one and struck out nine in sending Salem to its third straight loss. The Avalanche have struck out 31 times in the last two games.

Medrano, who came to Wilmington as part of the David Cone trade to the Toronto Blue Jays, went 4-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.

The Blue Rocks (20-21) took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Medrano singled to left off Salem starter Matt Pool, and Michael Evans, the Carolina League batter of the week, followed with his fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot to center. Wilmington had a chance to add another run later in the evening, but Raul Gonzalez was thrown out at the plate while trying to reach home on Mike Sweeney's double. Gonzalez left the game with an injury after a collision with Salem catcher Mike Higgins.

Wilmington added another run in the fifth inning before Salem (21-21) put a run on the board in the top of the sixth. Chris Sexton led off the inning with an infield hit and Vincente Garcia hit into a fielder's choice. Brian Culp singled to center and Forry Wells walked to load the bases with one out. John Giudice grounded out to second to score Garcia and cut the lead to 3-1. Mark Wells struck out to end the inning.

The Blue Rocks added an insurance run in the seventh off Salem reliever Scott Larock.

Salem had its chances against Ray. The Avalanche had runners at first and third in the third inning and failed to score, and had runners at the corners again in the fifth with no one out and did not score. Pool (3-3) went six innings and gave up three runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out seven in losing his third game.
